Timex ironman global trainer bodylink system?

Does anyone know the release date? Also, what are some reviews plus/minus with the unit (if anyone is currently using this system, even as a prototype)?

I spoke to a rep this past weekend and he could only tell me that it would be out in May. No reviews yet, but the Timex blog has a few athletes saying they love it.

I got to wear the one that the rep had, and I have to admit, that thing is hugh! It looks like I’m wearing my dive computer, but it weighs near nothing. Battery life is something like twenty hours, which I’m not too keen on, since I want to start doing ultra stuff next year, but we’ll see…

Do a search on here, it’s been talked about a bit and some of the Timex team members posted pictures of the unit on their wrists.

Apparently, it will be available in May at REI stores only, and in September for general distribution everywhere. I don’t know if that’s good or bad… One of the things that I’m concerned about is that they use the words ‘compatible with’ and not ‘comes with’ when talking about the HRM, so I don’t know if it will come with the HR strap or it will be an add-on. I also don’t know about price…

Here is what we have been told:

"The MSRP is $300 and $360 with a HRM strap. We are expecting our dealers could actually sell it for less which would put us less than the Garmin 310xt on both products!!

The product will be first shipped in a “Soft Launch” to REI Stores only in late May of 2010. All other retailers will get this in September 2010."…

Cool, thanks.

I’ve got some screen captures of some of the development software if anyone is interested.

There’s the first indication that it is similar to the Garmin 310XT - a 20 hour battery life. A move by Timex away from the sports watch with strap on pods to an all-inclusive wrist-mounted sports computer.

This’ll be the first device out there to go head-to-head with Garmin in that respect won’t it? I think I’m correct in saying that all other GPS enable devices for sport need additional pods for GPS, data collection…

Mac compatible?

The watch will be mac compatible and I would go out there and say that it is not a direct competitor to the Garmin… simply because it is the next level in fully functional training systems. Timex has put countless amounts of research, testing and development into this system and it can be seen in the final product; this things great and I am excited for everyone else to get their hands on it. REI mid may is what we have been told and everywhere else thereafter. PM me if you have specific questions and I can hopefully answer for you from my experience with it so far.

My notes have the Global Trainer with a 15 hour battery life.

I am trialling one, as is my wife - we are Team Multisport Timex members. They have a normal HRM strap which feeds direct to the watch. You can select HR, Max HR, Min HR, time at designated HR zone or any of a total of 39 data fields which can be displayed however you like. Importantly, you clone your HRM strap to your watch, so we get zero interference between our watches. They are a simply brilliant unit.

I am trialling a unit - what specifically do you want to know? Key things I like is the ability to interface directly with the computer AND Training Peaks; all the data fields it gives you, and the fact that you can use up to five different bikes giving speed, cadence etc etc etc. There is lots of flexibility to set up the watch to give you the data that you want, and it is very simple and quick to do this linked to the computer.

Does it display power from an ANT unit (Powertap, for example?)

Does it display power from an ANT unit (Powertap, for example?)

Yes.

It will also pick up Ant+ speed/cadence sensors.

Also water resistant to 50m.

That is an area that I have yet to try out, but I understand that as long as it has ANT+ then you can link it. It will give PowerMeter threshold, units and zones.

Is the watch strap replaceable or is it intergrated?

I love all my Timex watches. But the straps only have a limited lifespan.

A preson who had an Ipod Timex compatible advised me they couldn’t replace the band. So I hope this is not the case with this watch.

I am not sure. I will find out and get back to you. Just looking at the watch, the strap is integrated, but the strap also looks like it is a different component to the body of the watch. it seems to have pins that might allow strap replacement.

I think the Garmin is rated at 20hrs, but testing I have read gives it around 16hrs in use.

What is the size of the watch compared to a Suunto T6? I have small wrists and own a T6. The Garmin 405 doesn’t come close to fitting the way the band is integrated into the watch. Love the way the new Timex looks but will it fit?

Can you put some pics up of the watch on your wrist and just alone?

cheers alexander
