Timex file .PWX conversion for Strava

For those of you who use Timex GPS devices, I am currently using the new Run Trainer GPS, and would like to upload your activity to Strava you are probably aware that there is currently no support for the Time file format (.pwx). There is a nifty little site that executes a basic conversion (.pwx to .tcx) so you can now upload the file to Strava in .tcx format.

You need to take your .pwx file (usually saved in a folder for upload to Training Peaks) convert using the site, and then upload to Strava using their mac or pc upload tool. It’s a couple of more steps but it works and gets your data to Strava.

Thanks,

If that works well it might remove the major reason I don’t have a Timex GPS watch…
Garmin Connect will upload .tcx, so hopefully this converter works and I can use a watch that does what I want for less than $400.

Can any Timex-toting STers confirm?

not sure about Garmin Connect but it works on strava so in theory it should as well. i have not spent a lot of time to see if all the data fields convert but it looks good so far.

So I bit the bullet and got a Timex Global Trainer (it was on sale for $115, it seemed to good to pass up!)

After pulling the first .pwx file off the watch I pushed it into the converter at http://pwx.raytracer.dk/ It gave me a .tcx file - success! Or not.
So Garmin Connect is picky. I tried hacking the .tcx to have the device information (by copying it from a .tcx exported from Garmin Connect). Didn’t work - not with the original info, not with edited info.

Fortunately after a small amount of head-scratching I tried importing the file into Garmin Training Center. That worked. Then I could export that workout to .tcx and the resulting file uploaded correctly and was interpreted properly. It’s kind of a long-winded workaround, but it works.

Upload PWX
Convert to TCX through website
Import in Garmin Training Center
Export to TCX
Upload to Garmin Connect

Next time I feel like it I’ll take a look at the differences between the imported and exported TCX files to see if I can work out what Garmin Connect doesn’t like. Still, it means that I can use my new Global Trainer with Garmin Connect and all through free tools.

Hey Dr. steve

Please I need help in converting .pwx to gpx. I have opened the link you have provided , but when it downloads it opens the thing in Timex and then nothing happens .Can you please assist

Thank you
Dennis

That online converter isn’t mine, but I’ll take a look. I’ve actually had issues with that converter not working properly for the files I’ve recorded over the last couple of weeks, so I need to investigate anyway.

Can you put the .pwx up on Google Docs/Drive and DM me the link? I’ll see whether I can make the magic happen and let you know.

If the .pwx converter online is really FUBAR then I may have to spend some time in the next week or two and write my own.

Steve

I’ve managed to upload the file to google docs, how must I send it to you ?

Thank you

Does the conversion preserve power and HR data? I read on the Strava customer support site that it does not.

Thanks,

After searching the web for a long time, I decided to write my own tool for converting my workouts from my
Timex devices to .gpx and .tcx file formats in order to upload to Strava and other training websites.

You can give it a try at: http://www.pwx2gpx.com

If you have any questions check out the faq section or drop me a line via the contact us form.

Hope this helps the rest of the community as well.

I just use the “export to tcx” plugin in Sport Tracks
.
