Aside from weight and a big diff in price, is there any difference with respect to performance. I am assuming that the interface is identical (same cleat), but is the RXS “smoother” and just more robust ? Is the feel like the old Time Pedals (which were awesome…except the cleat was a pain the ass in transition).
Please post any experiences with either pedal. I am currently on Shimano SPD-R. They are OK, but a bit narrow, so there is actually some side to side “rocking/torsion” that would be nice to eliminate.
What is the RXE? Is that the cheapest of the new pedals? I bought the new time carbon/titanium silly-expensive pedals to put on my X-lite powercranks for races. They weighed about half as much as my look pedals I used on my training powercranks. They don’t engage as easily as Look pedals, but for races they were fine and the lighter weight was very apparent when pedaling.
I read in roadbike review that the cheaper ($70) plastic pedal would not stand up to much abuse, but was nearly identical in performance (as long as you didn’t bang them on anything).
Chad…from Nashbar.com…they seem to weigh in at the same range as the RXS (270 grams per pair):

I just bought the RXE in May and was disappointed that they are totally plastic. The front clip just broke off this last week and they are going back to lbs. Hopefully, it will be under warranty.
Those look pretty much like the ones I bought, except they weight more. I was tired of my Look cleats wearing out and thought that time had a longer-wearing metal cleat. I was half right. The rear part of the cleat is metal and engages a metal spring; the front half is plastic. Like I said, I wanted to try a new pedal and then had a dispute with my wife about not saving money. The result was that I decided to go all out and buy the most expensive pedal they made (about $240)
I did some research on road bike review when I bought these. The only thing I read about the cheaper pedals was the part I mentioned before about them breaking. A couple people had them come apart on them after they were hit hard in different manners. The other people who bought them said they were great pedals and only idiots (like me) would pay twice as much for carbon or titanium.
Chad
P.S. Since I only used them for races for a month before coming to lovely Fallujah I don’t know how the cleats wear over time. They were harder to engage than my look pedals, but felt more solid than the looks when clipped in.
