TIME RXS Pedals Keep Disengaging - Defective or what?

New Time RXS pedals and cleats mounted to SIDI Genius Shoes. Riding rollers.

Often disengaged while coming over the top of my pedal stroke or if I wiggled my foot a little any time

It seemed worse if I canted my ankle inwards towards the frame even a little.

I have used Time ATACS (tri, CX and MTB) on my bikes the last couple of year and used Time Equipes before that - never had any problems.

Thinking I might try and angle the cleat a little on the shoe.

Any other suggestions? Bad rider or bad pedal or what?

Thanks.

Have you adjusted them? (make them with more float, harder to clip out etc?)

They come set with the softest setting. Get a 2.5mm allen and adjust the tension thingie that is inboard (you can see it under the spring tab)

I will adjust them.

But, I thought that the adjustment is only to adjust the feeling of float and not retention/disengagement.

Or, does the float adjustment effectively restrict disengagment?

Thanks for the extremely prompt replies.

If you want a wider “Q” factor you need to look at the cleat - they have dots on them. Depeding on what shoe you mount what cleat to will alter that. From there you can only alter your spring tension.

Okay, the 2.5 is inboard as you can see here. I have mine on the tightest setting (pretty clear where that is when you see it). It is still pretty light to twist out - I have not once ever come out on accident.

In this photo you can see the dots, there is one on the plastic and one on the brass to indicate a wider or more narrow Q Factor - I prefer mine on the lesser setting.

Thanks. I will work make the adjustment and then ride them tomorrow. I have the Q factor set to “narrower” for lack of a better term.

I am hoping they work well. I have been happy with my other Time pedals.

I have two sets of times that have just started doing that as well. It doesn’t really matter what tension setting they are on. One of the pedals will just spontaneously release. One set it’s the right and the other the left, too bad they aren’t the same model. Any other thoughts? I’ve pretty much taken the whole thing apart and not found anything that seems to be wrong. Oh, and the third set I still works great- so it isn’t a cleat issue.

Time pedals are notorious for this disengaging when the cleat begins to wear. I used to race crits on them and I was always popping out of them in sprints…enough times that I got rid of them despite having a great platofrm for climbing. I switched to Speedplays and have never used another pedal brand on the road

Tried adjusting the float/tension and had no improvement.

I then angled the cleat to be more centered to my foot placement ( I pedal with my ankle inwards a little) and it was much better.

Its a new cleat/pedal/shoe combo so wear should not be an issue.

The verdict is still out until I can ride them outside and climb with them under power.
