At least that’s been my opinion. Hard to clip into and the plastic cleats have worn down after only a year with relatively mild walking on them. Glad I’ve still got my Time Equipe Pro Magnesium pedals. Now that’s a good pedal. The Impacts are going up on ebay cheap.
You know cerveloguy, I’m gonna go ahead and agree with you on this one. I tried the Impact pedal and I didn;t care for it too much. It has some positive attributes, but they are more than cancelled by the negatives. That darn cleat has too many problems for my taste.
Now, this new Time pedal may be just the ticket. It is a throw back to the original design we grew to like. It is much larger, very light and uses a pretty nice looking METAL cleat that appeared to be quite durable.
No ETA on the new ones, but I look forward to trying them.
I’m wondering if they had to come up with the new models because the impacts were so bad. The old Time pedals stayed the same for so long, yet between the impacts and the new Time pedals it was only a couple of years.
The old times were heavy but bulletproof. The impacts seemed flimsy with lots of small parts.
I’ve been riding Impacts on my tri bike all season with no problems. They are light and feel at least as good as the old Time pedals. The best thing is that Time switched to three-bolt cleats so I can use Sidi shoes without the thick and heavy adapter the old Time pedals would have required.
I also like the Impact cleats— You can run in transition areas easier than you could with the old Time pedals.
I don’t walk on my riding shoes much, so that might be why they held up well for me. Also, I only put about 3,000 miles on my tri bike this year.
Time pedals have been so good for me for so long, that I’ll never think of trying anything else. They cured my knee problems back in 1989 and I’ve had 100% healthy knees and ankles since then thanks to Time.
I have been hearing that the new Time pedals may show up as soon as Nov1. Co Cyclist says that is when they expect them. I know that in the UK the importer expects to have them in about ten days. I am quite looking forward to getting a pair.
I have been on a massive pedal hunt over the last two years. I was a long time Time equipe user (loved every aspect except for the full 5mm lateral float) and tried the impacts when they came out in June02. I didn’t much care for them though. I found them tricky to click into and the body seemed less durable that the equipe. The mag wore down a fair bit and that seemed to affect the float sensation. The SET adjustment was good in that it defined the characteristics of the float and how strong the centering force was, but on the highest setting I had a hell of a time just getting the cleat into the pedal!!! It was so bad that I couldn’t use that setting. Then I went to spd-sl, then Keywin, then Look Keo recently. I am back on the spd-sl until I can get the new Times.
They seem to have limited the lateral float to a simple 2.5mm and fixed it at that. The cleat also looks to have some lateral adjustment when mounting it on the shoes. Impact cleats give you fore and aft adjustment on the shoe, but no lateral or toe-in or out adjustments.
I gather that one thing they aimed at with the new pedal was to make it much easier to click into. I hope they succeeded. The lighter weight is nothing to sneer at but if I could find the absolute perfectly functioning pedal for me I would be quite willing to carry some extra grams there.
Well let’s hope Time have got it together with this model and deliver it soon!!
After 12 years on various Speedplay models, i decided to try some Impact pedals just recently. I have only used them indoors (family constraints and the like) but I do like them so far.
At Interbike I asked the Time guys if the cleat was interchangeable between Impact and the new pedal and they said anything shipped in the last three months was a copy of the new style cleat. The tell tale was extra plastic on the front hook section. (If I recall the conversation correctly). Is this the setup you’re talking about?
