Approximately how much time extra time is a swimmer tacking onto a swim by wearing regular shorts to swim instead of jammers or a speedo? In terms of additional secs per 200 or 1000 or something like that?
What are ‘regular shorts’? Are we talking Cargo Khakis here??

I tried the comparison recently (baggy swim trunks vs. tri-shorts) and it was about 8-10 seconds/100y for me. And I’m about another 8-12 seconds/100y faster with a wetsuit.

Sorry. No, not cargo shorts. Running shorts. What normal people wear as swim trunks, but not board shorts.
maybe 1sec per 100m.
I’ve never tried to swim in ‘‘regular shorts’’ but on me, I think the difference would be huge. At the pool I see young guys flying past me in the other lane in baggies so I understand that some people can swim fast in them, but for me with my propulsion, I don’t want to try it. Why do you want to wear baggies?

I’ll stop wearing baggy shorts when my physique supports me wearing something else, or when I stop swimming at a military pool.
much more than that. Not only is there more resistance, but they also cause you to drop your hips as they’re pulling you back.
maybe 1sec per 100m.
I swim in a military pool with jammers and have with a Speedo as well.
Anyway, swimming with baggies to me feels like swimming with two plastic Wal-mart bags tied to my waist. There will be a cumulative effect also. Each suceeding hundred wearing baggies will be slower than the previous one just due to exhaustion.
that has not been my experience. i’m just a MOP swimmer 24-25min OD swim, but i’ve tried several different drag shorts and they don’t add up to much of a time difference.
drag shorts ~1s/50m
pyjama trousers ~2-3s/50m
boardshorts/bermudas ~1-2s/50m
I guess it depends on your swim technique as well? my problem is not sinking legs but a lack of upper body endurance so i get less of a penalty with these things.
