Honestly, I am today years old to learn that it snows in Hawaii… under a blizzard warning, with up to 12 inches of snow and 100-mph winds forecasted… The record low temp in Hawaii is 12F (-11C), in 1979…
I did not know this…

I’m pretty sure I’ve heard of it snowing on the mountain tops there? I assume this will be more far reaching.
I once stood in the middle of a snow storm on the peak of Haleakala … a few days before the roof of the station on top was blown away during a snow storm.
It snows in Arizona too
.
You can also see the snow from the beaches of Los Angeles from time to time and those mountains aren’t nearly as high as in Hawaii
.
Boy Howdy you’ve not been cold till you’ve gone from Oahu over to the Big Island and up to PTA! Pohakuloa Training Area. It is COLD. As in “I’m not gay but lets snuggle to preserve life” cold
Peter Reed used to train just down the road prior to HI Ironman with the old “train high race low” philosophy.

The 1st time my wife and I visited the Big Island we had travelled the long way to Volcano NP, visiting South Point, Green Sands, Black Sands and the southern most bar in the US along the way. We had to follow that same route back to Kona, the Saddle road was closed due to a blizzard with 100 mph winds. I didn’t go to Hawaii to see winter.
Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea are over 13,000 feet and it’s snows there pretty much every year. Blizzard is not normal but snow definitely is. And today down in Kailua-Kona, it will be 75° and rainy.
Mauna Kea means “White Mountain”

I thought it meant death by fire and/or ice ![]()

Haleakala on Maui gets some snow too. None on Oahu. Those 13,000 ft plus hills do get some cold and not much air up there either.

I had no idea the mountains were that high, I wouldn’t have guessed more than a few thousand feet.
And if you measure Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea bottom to top they are even higher than Everest. That water around Hawaii be deep.
It snows in Arizona too
This I knew, having frozen my ass off for a sunrise at the Grand Canyon in early March a couple of years ago…
Hawaii surprised me.

Bike ride “Cycle to the Sun” to the top of Haleakala is 10,000’ of climbing over 30 miles.
One of the best days (actually nights) of my life was to ride to the top of Haleakala at night under a full moon. I did not know there were cows wandering around on the roads at night up there. Also seeing the line of headlights coming up before sunrise was pretty cool as well.

Montana, Idaho and Oregon aren’t on the list. What does the list look like with mean average altitudes?

Wyoming or Colorado almost certainly have the highest average altitude. Montana itself is fairly low compared to the Rockies further south.
Montana and Oregon have the lowest high points of the western states (from the rockies west).
