Tiger Woods: ‘I feel like I am going to play’ in the Masters

I am surprised at his recovery. Always a fun weekend to watch golf.

some people i root for even when they screw up, and he’s one. Can’t defend it so won’t try.

Good luck Tiger

Completely agree.

Same.

Martinsville and the Masters this weekend. Should be epic.

I am the reaction to your action.

Make that two of us.

Make that 3, can’t stand the guy.

So we have one of the Hendrix boys (preferably Larson) win the race and Tiger the tournament…

I’ll never understand the leeway certain people get whilst others get none.

I am indifferent to Tiger.

I also don’t fully understand the draw to him. Yeah, he was great way back when. But other than his talent, it’s not like he’s got a sparkling personality or anything.

Someone please explain to me why this guy is still so popular because I don’t get it.

I don’t even follow golf and I think Tiger is an ass, but if he turns out to be in the hunt Sunday, I’ll tune in and probably be rooting for him. I think it’s just the appeal of a good story.

i can’t speak to why he’s popular with others . . .

for me it’s the crazy work ethic + propensity to piss it all away

don’t know why that’s a good combo for me with him, and can easily see why it would drive others away

Similar to Lionel, perhaps.

I have long held the belief that Tiger was the first really good athlete to play golf. It was a fat white man’s game forever, then an actual athlete took it up and the inevitable results followed.

He’s popular because he was the best there was for years and I would argue the best that has ever played the game, sorry Jack, Arnie, Gary, Bobby Jones et al. Tiger made the PGA tour for years and increased prize money for everyone and made golf cool for a long time. He transcends the sport and is a cultural figure. What is there not to like about him?

So he cheated on his wife a little. I don’t hold that against an athlete. I don’t like athletes for their personal lives. I like them because they can do what no one else can do in their chose sport.

I also liked Lance Armstrong and thought Cycling was much better with him in the picture. Also liked Greg, the Big Mig, Cancellara, Hincappie and a host of others. Lance by all accounts is an ass, but on the bike he was entertaining and larger than life.

Do you only like sports folks with “sparkling personalities” Ha???

No. Learn to read. I said I am indifferent to Tiger.

I don’t care one way or the other about him. I don’t care that he cheated on his wife. I realize that he was once the best.

Now he is not. He’s a broken former champion. He will never be what he once was. He will likely miss the cut this weekend if he plays.

What I don’t get is his draw. This day and age.

I understand why people are drawn to athletes with personality. I understand why people are drawn to unbelievable talent.

Tiger is neither of those things any more.

I was explaining to you why he was still so popular…something you said you didn’t get.

A once iconic sports figure will always be popular, even after his prime. Ever see Michael Jordan play with the Wizards? See George Foreman try to duke it out in his 40’s. The popularity does not end when they age. They have banked enough celebrity and good will from their time as the best ever ( even if it was years ago)

When Tiger tees up at the masters this week, people will cheer in hopes he does show some of his magic ( that by the way, won him the Masters a few years go) and he pulls out another win. The crowd when nutz when Nicklaus won at 46.

Frankly, I don’t see why anyone would NOT like Tiger. He has been the best thing for the sport of Golf in the history of the game.

So he cheated on his wife a little.

What about how he treated the women he was with?

Do you only like sports folks with “sparkling personalities” ?

Actually, now that you mention it, yeah.

I can recognize they are good, but it doesn’t mean I like them or am pulling for them to succeed. Tiger was very good. And I was rooting against him every time he played.

Exceptions are made I am sure when they are “my” asshole, but discarded immediately if they go to the Yankees or Patriots for instance. Though I never would have liked Burfict on the Raiders and Bill Romanowski was always a bastard.

I have long held the belief that Tiger was the first really good athlete to play golf. It was a fat white man’s game forever, then an actual athlete took it up and the inevitable results followed.

First fit athlete to play the game at a high level was Babe Didrickson, she was followed by Gary Player. I am sure I am missing others.

As for Tiger, he is like Michael Jordan in that he is forever constructing internal challenges in order to raise the level of his game. This new challenge for him is not so much the play of the stroke but rather walking the hills for 72 holes.
