Thule Roof Rack Question (Diisc rear wheel/Deep wheel/etc.)

Looking for some information regarding how to carry a bike with a disc rear wheel. I have a track bike that I enjoy riding on my lunch hour and drive about 10 miles in to work. I know it is not recommended but am looking for how people might or do tie down the rear wheel without the space for the traditional tie down. My rack is the fork mount roof style.

Secondly. I have changed a bike to a Hed 9 rear wheel and my tie down for the rear wheel no longer is long enough to tie down the rear wheel. Same problem with my fat bike wheel/tire being too big for the length of strap. Anyone have a solution for this problem? I have used two tie downs strapped together with the Hed 9 and a small rope for the fat bike.

Any direction would be great.

Reminder that I do understand that it is not recommended to use a rack with deep wheels or disc rear wheel.

If you’re committed to a roof rack style, the 1 Up roof rack is the only one I’m aware of that can handle a disc rear wheel.

They have a ‘spacer kit’ to make it compatible with fat bike tires too.

Reminder that a HED Jet is a non-structural fairing only. So you run the risk of cracking/breaking the fairing if you strap it down like that. Personally I’d just pick up or swap out for an alloy rear wheels for use with the rack and swap it out when you are ready to ride. If you have a HED Stinger then I think that is okay actually since that is a full carbon wheel.

Or just get a 1UP hitch rack instead and then like another has suggested which will solve your problem for both the HED Jet along with the Fat Bike.

I have a Reynolds deep carbon wheel that I tie down with an old pedal strap and some felt between the wheel and the strap. The rear strap is just to hold the bike in the case of sudden braking or hitting a pot hole, etc. so you don’t need to crank it down, just snug it up. Agree I would not do this with a aluminum wheel with carbon fairing. For a rear disc wheel, 1UP is definitely the best option. They make an adapter for road tires so you could carry anything from 23mm to 5" fat bike.

I’ve taken lashing and secured the chain stay to the bike rack tray. Kinda takes the whole rear wheel out of the process and keeps the rear of the bike secure to the mount.

Thank you for the responses. I have ordered the 1Up rack for my roof rack.
