This video (VHS) was mailed out to all participants of the California Ironman 2001 by one of the sponsors, Janus. I converted it to a DVD a few years back and just remembered about it as I was adding a video to Vimeo. I thought I’d share…
Thanks i had never seen that one. I was a volunteer that day, i was the lead kayaker for the swim. As i recall it was a very long swim, only a couple guys broke an hour and they all had wetsuits. And not much current to talk about as it was in the harbor, not in the surf like the entro leads you to believe, so dead flat and calm.
Love that video , my two sons where the one in the yellow shirts , that said , go dad. How time flies , they are 17 and 21 now . Nice to see all the 650 wheeled bikes. THANKS
Set my IM PR at that race. Bonked and missed out on breaking 10 hrs. Still got in to Kona (the good old days, when you could be slow and get a slot :-)).
TORITO!!! thanks so much for posting that. I did the race in 2000 and was so traumatized by it (it was my first IM) that I refused to go back in 01 and do it BUT I volunteered and was a catcher in the finishing chute. I still have a pic of me & shawn where he looks like death & i’m grinning from ear to ear! good times!
story I heard was that they mistakenly measured nautical miles instead of statute miles, so about a difference of 800 ft per mile of the swim.
You heard right. The Marines were so proud to map out an EXACT swim course w/ all their gear, but made it nautical. I was top 10 out of the water w/ a 1:00:xx I believe and maybe a minute or 2 behind the leaders.
Wow…not sure who that was at 7:00 in on the run in the ATC singlet.
A quick glimpse at about 6:14, also in ATC gear, looked like Jon Hill…the original owner/founder of ATC. He and his wife raced that year and were featured on the one hour TV show that aired on ESPN? …back in the day when most of the IM races were eventually on TV.
Also…if someone could confirm…that was Bill Bell at 1:22, right? Just seeing him made me smile.
I was talking to Dan Empfield recently about the history of the sport of triathlon.
We came to the conclusion that two of the most significant events in the sport where:
The inclusion in the Olympic Games
The expansion of the Ironman events beyond the original 5 IM’s - something that was really spear-headed and driven forward by Graham Fraser with the addition first of a number of additional IM events in North America.
