THRIVE - book review

With all the vegetarian threads in the past few weeks I picked up the book “Thrive - A guide to optimal health and performance through plant-based whole foods” by Canadian Triathlete Brenden Brazier to read up on the topic. Here are my initial thoughts:

He could have toned down the sales pitch for his energy/meal drink called Vega. Mentioned in just about every thrid sentence from the mid-point of the book to the end.

I’m interested in his cookbook planned for this year.

I’m giving the liquid meal (once a day) a try this month. I’m mixing my recovery drink mix with a scoop of medical food replacement mix my wife gets at her office, chlorella, Maca and Hemp protien powder. The extra fiber has been a wake up call to my system.

I did not realize how acidic my system was getting as a result of my diet and the consequences I face if not corrected.

I don’t eat enough seeds and nuts.

So the question is, has anyone else read it and what was your take on his philosophy about stress and plant based foods as a method to reduce system stress? It made sense to me. It’s not making me into an overnight vegan or anything either. He does a good job of not preaching that note, allowing the reader to decide for themselves how much of his suggestions to take into their own life.

Not a big book, not a complicated book. Just right for a quick primer on the subject.

I read it and for me it just didn’t do it. I am a vegan (or at least about 99%, some stuff creeps in through outside food), but it didn’t really go through enough for me. I think the system stress idea is a very good one, but I don’t know how much it plays out in reality. A lot of the acid/base blood talk I am very, very skeptical of. But I will say that my overall health is hugely better. My cholesterol is now 144 since eating this way, down from 212. Totally agree on the sales-pitchiness. That kills me and may be the biggest problem I had.

I have not read his book, but I have tried his meal replacement product. I would just add one scoop to my post workout recovery smoothie, and liked it. One thing that I got from reading on his website was what I already knew- I simply need to eat more “green”- more vegatables. I do really well with fruit, but not so much with the veggies.

I’m hypothyroidic myself (my thyroid ain’t workin much these days) so the informaiton on Maca was interesting to me, I’ll be doing more research on that stuff. Cholesterol usually drops big time when people go off higher fat meat products and eat more fiber. I’m really looking for improved gut health myself. Glad to hear your health is good.
