I’ve been looking into some used bikes, and I found a pretty good deal on a really nice bike from 2011 that has full Dura Ace Di2 7970. Is there any reason to worry about those parts still holding up after five years of use? Should I expect to have to replace the battery or anything in the short term?
Based on my knowledge should be fine, replacement parts are still available atm so you’ll get a few years use at least
And because the 10-speed Di2 7970 was so quickly replaced by the 11-speed, there are still lots of brand new 7970 parts out there at steep discounts. For things like cassettes and chains, parts are cheaper and easy to find and you should probably get 10-speed Ultegra ones anyway (that’s what I do with my DA 7900, not Di2).
I had the 7900 DA di2 and loved it…worked great. That said, it uses on giant wiring harness so if you were to get the bike, I would invest in one more of those because from what I understand they are not making too many, or are not making anymore of those. If you accidentally cut one of the wires, you will not have any use of wherever that wire went and there is no way to replace on wire…it’s not like the etube. But as for function, worked amazingly. There were obviously some big improvements from the first gen (mainly etube and the computer interface). But if you want di2, are okay with 10 speed, great product. I have di2 on all my bikes TT, road, mountain, and my wife’s bikes too. Top quality stuff.

Thanks for any experience/advice!
I had this set 2 years ago and had to replace a shifter, a junction box and something else. I live in San Diego and finding replacement parts was a pain in the ass and cost me about $300 a shot. I wouldn’t by that bike as it most likely be a “penny wise, pound foolish” purchase. You cannot order replacement parts from Shimano.
I thought I just read about a recent firmware update that allowed you to mix and match parts between old and new systems (like using 9000 derailleurs on 7970 systems)? Am I mistaken? Is there more to it?
Installed Di2 7970 on my Trek Speed Concept 9.9 in 2011, still motoring on 5 years later and the battery needs a charge maybe every 3-6 months depending on use. As long as the cable joins are adequately sealed, the system seems pretty bullet proof. Happy with my setup and have seen no reason to change even after all this time, just my 2 cents but be sure to make sure functionally its all working and run it through the full adjustment and tuning routine.

You may be able to if they are all etube. But you can’t make a 10 speed Ultegra rear der work as an 11 speed.

Thanks for any experience/advice!I would recommend you stay away from anything that isn’t e-Tube.
