Thoughts on Casco?

With all the hype for the Giro Air Attack as anyone looked at the casco offerings? Seems like some pretty innovative stuff (removable front vent cover on the SpeedTime).

The bottom helmet you posted (Speedtime) is $548 retail. You can actually buy a Kask Bambino for less.

assuming you dont have a large head that is…the bambino comes in a size M only. I have had my eye on the new Casco helmets, spendy for sure, lots of folks on the track using the speedtime already, would be interested to see how it stacks up against other aero helmets. Unless they have some kind of miracle anti-fog I could imagine that visor being a nightmare

Casco Warp for track, Kask Bambino for TT.

A friend of mine sold me his casco warp carbon after “retiring” from track racing and I love it. Probably not as aero as some of the newer offerings, but it’s comfortable, doesn’t seem to overheat, doesn’t buffet the wind at all and looks exceedingly badass.

I bought a Speedair out of the UK online yesterday.
I briefly considered the Speedtime but the absurd price… just couldn’t justify it.
I’ll use the Speedair for road racing and iron distance triathlon and my old long tail TT helmet for 1/2IM and short course.

where did you end up buying it (if you dont mind sharing)?

I just received an email that their distributor is out of stock until May!
I was given the option of putting a deposit or trying to find it elsewhere.
So, I emailed Casco directly looking for other distributors and they said they won’t be available until May as well.
I have a feeling that any web store selling these or the Speedtime helmets has them listed “in stock”, but they are in fact, only arriving in May.

I need a new helmet this year, so I guess I’ll wait for the one that I want.

Have you been racing tris with this helmet? Is it pretty comfortable after a few hrs? How hot is it?

2 70.3s and 2 Olys so far. One of the Olys was a really hot day, but the helmet was fine. The retention system suspends the shell off your head nicely and seems to keep everything comfortably cool.

It’s the only aero helmet I’ve ever had but it’s certainly plenty comfortable for 90km in a HIM.

I just can’t see where any of those round shaped helmets would be as fast as a traditional areo helmet, or any advantage over a skate helmet and some tape. For the track in events where you need to turn your head some they might be a little advantage over a regular helmet, but to my eyes they just don’t look like they could be aero at all. I do know a bike hat on backwards and the old Brancale helmet beat other road helmets. Would like to see comparative drag numbers against the same rider , bike and helmet with any of those round ones vs the teardrop shaped ones.

Holy crap you are going old school! I’m not even sure if 1% on this board will even remember what the brancale was. Those were old helmets and only needed to pass ANSI standards so were actually pretty thin “shelled” (I know they had a lycra cover). The backwards hat is not surprising as there is no additional frontal area. Even an aero helmet adds to that.

Those tests you are quoting are about 24-25 years old. But then again so is my Bell Vortex ('92 vintage) that I still use from time to time since it field tested very fast for me.

That is utmost crazy. Only one size? Let me rephrase, that is actually sad.

Not unlike the Rudy Wingspan…

I have the new casco Speed time which is the picture on the bottom. Its an awesome helmet and the removable vent is great for warmer races, its the most comfortable helmet that I’ve ever worn and I own a giro air attack with shield and a rudy wingspan. The visor covers the entire face , ears, cheek and jaw so it might test really well in the wind tunnel but I haven’t seen any wind tunnel tests on it. I’m going to go see Jim from erosports this winter and do a bunch of testing then I’ll report back my data.

Agreed, that is why I posted in that Rudy 57 thread, that it is hopefully not limited to a size below that.

Is the warp approved for races in the US?

The Warp III’s which were being sold by Chicago Velo campus a couple of years ago are legal with CPSC sticker, they are good for track events, but would be real hot for endurance events.

Is the warp approved for races in the US?

Tomkat’s right, it is CPSC approved so you should be golden. In Australia, the rule is that helmets must be approved by some authority, not necessarily AS/NZS. For the two “A” races I’ve done in the warp I did email the respective RDs to ask explicitly if there would be an issue with the helmet and there was none.
