Thomas/Souza So Cal Burrito Review

I was glad to see a post on “Best Burritos.” We have been logging, not only miles, but also notes on Burritos. Firstly, you have to understand that eating burritos as our main fuel for our 100+ rides is the stimulus that keeps us riding…seriously.

In the last 9 weeks, together we have riden 28 100mi+ rides. The main source of fuel has been a carne asada burrito, preferably at mi 60 or 3 hours. I have found by having something with saeity, you never gorge yourself later on in the day. You may think it may sound odd that eating a 800 calorie log composed of 78%fat can help you keep the weight off, but you are satisfied. Tuesday we rode an easy 110 to Laguna and back. I consumed 2 water bottles and a burrito in the 6hr and 3 min. Kenny had the same, but with Clif’s new drink in his bottles. Carne Asada will help you shed the pounds!!!

Initially, I tried scoring 100% on the taste of the MEATand juices (some call this fat!) Some places sneak in a few points by having Mexican Nationals working. This adds authenticity. If they do not speak english, it seems to add points to their score. If they have mexican music playing inthe kitchen, they get more. If it is being played on an AM radio, they get their final bonus!

Some of the better burritos we have come across:

4*Pedro’s in San Clemente…traditional so cal burrito shop!

5*Adolpho’s in Laguna Bch Great atmosphere and food…get black beans here…refried have lard…

4.5*Aberto’s in Azusa very good with a lot of grease…

3*Papas in Laguna Beach…very bad service

4.25* Gerald’s Taco Shop, Hillcrest

4.25* Gordo’s in Pasadena

3.75* jaunita’s Long Beach…not bad…not great

4.75*Tio Alberto’s (formerly Taco’s Alcupoco) San Luis Obispo Very goooood! Been eating burritos here for 10 years, but had my first one with the cycling, which made it even better.

The Number 1 burrito place is…Carlito’s in Carpenteria!!! We rode over 160miles to get to this one. Kenny had told me that he remembered getting a great burrito on the the way to Tinley’s Toughest years ago. He said it was soooo good that he once drove there to get one.

To challenge his driving story, we saddled up on the hogs and rode there to eat one, and bring 3 back on the train with us. This is the best carne asada burrito I have sunk my teeth into.

If I make it up to Dan and Monty’s camping trip this weekend (in the middle of nowhere,) I will either have to keep all rides under 100mi, or bring a few burritos along for the trip.

Kenny just took off to Oklahoma for a week. He will replace his burritos with energy beers.

Happy eating!

Paul

If I make it up to Dan and Monty’s camping trip this weekend (in the middle of nowhere,)…
If?! Don’t puss out. You can make your own burritos up there, or better yet find another place in the area to add to your all-important burrito review.

is that were your talking about? not a santana’s fan?

I think you’ll find Roberto’s in San Diego (Ocean Beach) to score pretty high on your list based on that criteria. I LOVE Roberto’s!

Having grown up in Carpinteria and still visiting my Mom there now, I can second the CARLITO’S carne asada!
