THIS is Thomas Hellriegel?

I swear I never saw him without sunglasses and a hat/helmet/bandana

He looks younger than I expected… (yeah I know he’s the left one)

Hey freestyle, is that you on the right, trying to show off your abs to Hell on wheels ?

I think I have less hair on my arms and legs combined…

Thomas Hellriegel is cool.

yep, it’s him. What seems to be funny is that he’s giving swim tips

He’s a pretty good swimmer… Low 50’s and high 40’s…

Where were these pics when the hottie thread was going???

D.

What happened to Hellriegel in Hawaii?

What happened to Hellriegel in Hawaii?

Exit in T2, did not feel “well” or “powerful” on the bike, not sick, could not figure out why (effect of very heavy volume for 10 years?), bike split was 5:15 (!?)
.

I always heard he trained a lot, but does anyone have any more insight into the subject?

He trains A LOT… when asked, he laughs and says, “no, no, no…”

I’m not so sure what ‘A LOT’ is… I want numbers :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Ask Sérgio, they ate breakfast together in Font Romeu for 3 weeks. Of course knowing the two, I bet it wasn’t the chattiest of breakfasts, LOL…

Regularly over 700+ Km per week on the bike, from what I’ve heard/read.

Joel

In font romeu he wasnt training much, like 24 hours. But that was pre IM gemany that wasnt a good race for him.

BUT in the winter he always trains in lanzarote (or one of the spanish islands), and this year he logged weeks with about 50-60 hours witch ±90% were bike rides!!! unbelievable.

he is a pretty nice guy despite his appearence of bad german

Does any pro ever disclose the details of his training (in any sport)?
I have heard (just heard!, not from him) 20.000 to 25.000 bike, > 5.000 run - no idea if this really is accurate or even “a lot” for a top guy.

A recent posting on the German equivalent of this forum indicated that “Epic camp”-dimensions are just “normal training” for TH  .

  • So, no facts, just rumours.

I remember reading a number of different anecdotes about TH, about what a great guy he is. One particular story stands out, when Peter Reid was struggling on the run in Hawaii in 2001… TH caught Reid who was walking on the marathon, and he convinced Peter to run with him. Reid went with him for a little bit before eventually dropping out, but I found this amazing. Hellriegel no doubt knew that if Reid recovered and ‘got his legs’ back, he’d out-run him. TH ended up in 5th, but what a classy move.

I went to watch my dad at Ironman Canada in 1995 I believe, when I was 11. I was in an elevator with my extremely talkative then 5 year old little brother when Thomas got on the elevator, at the time I remember not registering that this was Hellriegel standing in front of me, even though I had been told he was staying in our hotel. My brother immediately asked him if he was doing the ironman, he replied that he was in a German accent, still I had no idea who he was, my brother continued to explain to him that my dad was also in the race and was really really fast. Instead of mentioning that he was also pretty good, Hellriegel humored my little brother and told us he hoped our dad did well in the race before getting off the elevator. The next day he demolished the field and won easily, by then I had realized he was the one I’d talked to in the elevator the day before. He came off as a modest and quiet guy. I always laugh thinking about my little brother telling one of the greatest ironman cyclists of all time that he better watch out because my dad might beat him.

I agree, Tomas is a super nice guy.

My dog’s name is Hellriegel…

Never fails to get some strange looks when people ask “What’s your doggies name?”

(BTW, I found him abandoned on the side of the road in a Budweiser box the day Hellriegel won the Ironman in '97)
