This Forum is Beginning to Suck

It seems like triathlon is taking a back seat on this forum. I don’t know about anyone else but I am spending most of my time on Gordo’s forum where the topics tend to relate to multisport. At least I know where to come if I want to discuss gay marriages, the bible, politics, Jannet’s breast, relationships, or just about everything else I don’t need a triathlon forum for…oh I forgot…this is a lifestyle forum now…which lifestyle is that?

What’s stopping YOU from posting in or starting ON-TOPIC disucssions?

The on topic discussions are here … no one is replying to them. If you don’t contribute, you cannot complain. That’s rule #1.

Seriously, start an on-topic multisport thread. Comment on the existing ones. They are here. Really. They are here.

If you don’t want to start one, do a search and I’m sure somewhere on the 326 pages of threads is a discussion on the very topic you are dying to discuss.

Get the discussion going.

Edit: There are 19 threads currently on Page 1. 14 of them are on topic with triathlon, marathons, health, nutrition. The threads don’t discuss themselves. Post away. Even more on page 2, and 3, and …

Ready2run,

I am having trouble with the brakes on my Corvette. Could you help me?

Aloha,

Larry

PS. And where can I find a good barber in Las Vegas?

don’t worry you will get 500 posts…if you have trouble with brakes for your tri bike go to www.byrn.org
.

Message Board Posts are like channels on TV… you should pick and choose those channels you want to participate in… I don’t think I would say TV is bad just because it has the “Golf Channel” on it. (BTW, I have absolutely nothing against the Golf Channel… just, not my cup of tea.

FWIW Joe Moya

If it makes you feel any better … once Gordo’s website has 326 pages of threads … and as many members, the threads will tend to get off topic here and there.

It seems folks don’t want to have the same discussions day after day, week after week, month after month. This message board is not unique.

Post a list of topics you want to see discussed, and let everyone have at em.

Today I swam for an hour, ran for an hour (in the snow … awesome). Wanna talk about that? I also played with my son for about 1.5 hours, gave him a bath and watched the girl’s HS basketball game (Senior night). Wanna talk about that?

1, Don’t be the guy that complains, but doesn’t contribute.

  1. Don’t be the guy that boasts another message board.

  2. Don’t be the guy that gains acceptance at another message board by complaining about your old one.

Nobody like Guys 1, 2, and 3.

I guess what I am saying is don’t depend on everyone else to provide you entertainment and information. If you have a question or comment, start a thread … just like you did this useful one.

Well dude, that’s just, like your opinion.

After a while i think people get sick of the standard, What bike should i get, Campy vs shimano, what wheels should i get, aero or lightweight, what tuby vs clincher, drafting, …

It don’t matter to the jesus.

yes totally dude

glad it doesn’t matter to the jesus
.

It’s off season for all you US people isn’t it? Probably has something to do with it too.

6 posts, including 2 in this thread, in 4 months … and you complained that others are getting too off topic.

Dude, I’m trying to figure out why you made this thread, but I ain’t seeing it.

I’m certainly guilty of contributing in off-topic threads, but I’m also credited with starting quite a few on topic threads … you’ve basically done neither.

Go reply in an on-topic thread. Hint: This one doesn’t count.

If this forum is beginning to suck it ain’t because of the off topic threads, it’s because of the on-topic threads that go un-noticed and receive no replies. So, ask yourself … have you done your part to make this place “non sucky”?

Have at it. Lots of on-topic posts begging for attention.

dude this seems to be a real emotional issue for you…don’t worry no one will take your credits away
.

It bothers me when someone states a problem, but doesn’t want to be part of the solution. Just what the world needs, another critic. I’ll still be able to sleep tonight, but for the moment I’m shaking my head in wonder.

I didn’t ask you to start a thread complaining about the board, and then not get involved in any on-topic discussions. You opened that door yourself. Don’t act shocked that someone stepped through it.

What did you really expect your thread would bring? “Thanks mom, we’ll never go off topic again”? Really?

So, my question still stands “What are you going to do to make this board better?” Don’t deflect this to me. Take it upon yourself. You opened your mouth, now back it up with contributions to threads. That is simply direct speaking, not anger.

TripleThreat has a great point. You’re complaining about that which you could do something about. But your stats (7 to date, only 3 outside this thread) show that you haven’t made much of an effort towards fixing what you perceive as a problem.

As for me, I’m wondering what you are still doing here.

Rusty

I agree with you to a certain extent, though my beef is not with off topic threads as much as it is with the attitudes around here lately. This forum has definitely changed quite a bit in the last 3-4 months. It seems like there’s about a 50% chance now that if you start a thread, someone will ridicule you, condescend to you, call you a liar, or be just plain rude. Actually, now that I think about it, it’s becoming more like most forums on the web and less like the other tri forums. Depending on your view, that could be a good or a bad thing. Personally, I love to argue and debate various topics, but I prefer to do so in person so I can look people in the eye and know when they’re just arguing for the sake of arguing or when they’re just plain full of sh*t. I have been drawn into a few fights here, but I find it frustrating and very unappealing. I just don’t like to argue with someone anonymously over a keyboard. It just feels like people will say anything they want because it doesn’t really matter, you don’t know them, you’ll probably never even meet them. Whether or not someone lists their name is immaterial; you still don’t know them and who says it’s a real name anyway?

FWIW, I think it’s mostly because it’s the off season(at least I hope that’s why).

At the risk of being guilty of TripleThreats rule #2, I have found myself perusing cruciblefitness and trinewbies(can you really still call it that?) a bit more lately. Gordo site is terrific for training advice but is a bit too Cult of Gordo for my taste at times(sorry Gordo, it’s not your fault).

It seems like there’s about a 50% chance now that if you start a thread, someone will ridicule you, condescend to you, call you a liar, or be just plain rude.

That’s something everyone needs to take upon themselves if they want to see the board continue to be a helpful place. I’ve certainly been guilty of what you describe above, but I wonder how much of it is avoidable. I mean, really, in some of the threads, half of each person’s post seems to be describing “how” they are saying what they are saying, as to prevent any and every misconception, assumption, and interpretation that could occur. And then the miscommunications still occur to some degree. Everyone wants a short, to the point response, but then those briedf statements get taken as an array of emotions, and to mean a variety of things, whihc may or may not be the author’s intent.

I agree with you on the preference of discussing person to person … more times than not this board is my adult conversation (outside of my wife). It’s so convenient. I think too much of my conversation is dependent on people hearing my tone and seeing my face, for me to be really nonoffensive and abbreviated on the net. I feel like everytime I say something I either have to “tippy toe” or point out that “I’m not typing with fists”. Some of that is my fault for what has happenned a week or so ago, some of it isn’t.

Thinking about what you (jaylew) said in the quote above, I would assume that many posters are like me … impulse posters. Sit down at the PC for short bursts and read a thread, and post immediately, without digesting all of the info and really trying to respond to exactly what they’re saying as oppossed to what you think they are saying or what you want them to say. That situation is easily fixable if one wants to fix the problem.

I’m off to read more of Armstrong’s book, hit the hay for 'bout 4 hours and do it all over again. Friday. Mmmmmm, Friday.

I think too much of my conversation is dependent on people hearing my tone and seeing my face

Exactly.

more times than not this board is my adult conversation

I imagine you must be starving for it after talking to kids all day.

The important posts like what is happening to USAT and what can the average joe do improve it - is nonexistant on these boards. If it wasn’t for 3 attorney’s yelling at each other, the Steve Locke thread would have died after the initial post.

Let people respond to some local duathlons charging $52-$55 for a 3-15-3 race and $9 more for a one day liscense. Talk about Oly tri’s going for $125-$150. Talk about whether M’Dot is oversaturating the market. Talk about janet’s breast- oh, we did that. Talk about whether people are happy with USAT even on the local level turning into nothing more than back room politics than worrying about helping the sport grow.

No matter which board you go on, once a thread like that gets going, it is either killed by a moderator or it just dies a lonely death

Hang out at Gordo’s. It’s a great forum. No one will miss you here. Jeez, it’s the off season - soon enough we’ll all be talking about carbon fiber and leg shaving.

Went to Gordo’s site. It is a nice site, but the message board blows compared to here. This site has way more info and you actually get responses to your posts, even if you don’t like the responses.

It’s off-season (in the Northern Hemisphere), therefore, the posts will be off-topic.

Put the boot in and come up with an engaging tri-related topic and hopefully you can be the hero that saves the Forum.

But your post is off-topic at this point. Don’t just post about your complaint, shape the direction of this forum and post some tri-related stuff. Post enough, and people will start discussing.

I, for one, think that this is the absolute best forum anywhere, and that this forum has the best posters anywhere on the net, off-topic or on.
