On May 10, 2008 the U.S. Navy’s SEAL Motivators bring the Navy SEAL Fitness Challenge to Dearborn, Michigan. The Navy SEAL Fitness Challenge is an ecclectic test of fitness, strength and endurance that includes swimming, running and calisthetics such as push-ups, sit-ups and pull-ups. Navy SEALs will adminster and score the tests.
The Navy SEAL Fitness Challenge on May 10, 2008 in Dearborn, Michigan is one of only four stops around the United States for the Navy SEAL Fitness Challenge.
The event is **free **and features award T-Shirts color-coded to signify the level of fitness demonstrated by participants during the challenge. A Blue T-Shirt signifies the “SEAL Competitive” level, the highest level of fitness.
The Navy SEAL Fitness Challenge is not specifically a recruiting event and is open to all participants. It is a new effort by the U.S. Navy to motivate civilians to incorporate fitness into their daily lives and adopt good exercise/health habits.
I noticed for the 1.5 mile run it said “(tennis shoes)”. Do they mean that it’s ok to wear running shoes and they just don’t know any better than to call running shoes “tennis shoes”? Or do they mean exactly that, tennis shoes only, no running shoes?
Running shoes are fine. The reason for this is an antiquated rule from nearly 30 years ago that required the test to be performed in boots. That has long since gone away.
No freestyle. Take a peek at the photos of the event. It is a pretty major undertaking on the part of the Navy so we are really excited to have it here in Dearborn as one of the four nationwide stops.
This will be a fun event to prepare for, esepcially for triathletes, since it has a good bit different fitness component than triathlon. I would suggest the preparation for this event- especially at this time of year- will help imporve overall core strength, ftiness and stability of the athlete for triathlons.
The run, 1.5 miles at about a 6:40 pace is pretty easy. I’ve never tried to swim 500 yards using anything except free style so I don’t know. The other events I’d flunk big time except for sit ups.
1.5 miles 6:40 pace easy, Nah. But, for 1.5 miles, I sure could give it a shot. I agree, that type of swim who knows.
But, the other stuff, I agree, would need to do some training. But, they are all great core stuff as Tom stated.
So, how about a new test, who can make the seal challenge?
Tom, how is it that Dearborn is on the tour? No disrespect intended to your hometown but the other locations are considerably larger or is there a connection for the SEALs to Dearborn other than yourself?
I could make the competition standards other than the pull ups thanks to last year’s operation. Breatstroke was my competition stroke when I was swimming for the county as a kid and I still have the speed, more so than freestyle
That would be cool to do, as it will be my 50th birthday. I could do the swim, run, and situps at Seal Competitive today (being a former Masters breaststroker certainly helps!). The pull-ups and push-ups (especially the latter) would require some training.
(edit)
Photo 36 shows someone in a trisuit doing pullups.
Thanks for posting this, being a Marine (though I have been out for 20+yrs) I love the thought of doing it again. I did have the opportunity to train at the SEAL base in San Diego and it is not easy. I look forward to training for this and your right, it would be great overall training for triathletes.

I think you need to up your run mileage, if you can’t do 1.5 miles under 10:00.
We just installed a new pull-up bar here in the store. I can do 1. I have a long way to go which is good since May 10 is a long way from now- I keep telling myself.
This is an official U.S. Navy event, presented by the U.S. Navy. I had (have) absolutely no involvement whatsoever except as someone spreading the news. I’m very excited about the event though- this is absolutely huge!
