Thieves at IM Fl?

Anyone else have something stolen at IM Fl? I set down a nice back pack (TYR with custom logo CB&I tri) by the sound board at the B.Walk before swim time. Had my name on it permanent marker, when the family went to retrieve it…gone. I guess it wasn’t too smart to set it down, but the race was starting and I had not located my family yet, I honestly didn’t think anyone would mess with it but too late. Some other dude said he set some gear down for only a minute and it was also swiped. I would like to think that no one affiliated with triathlon stole it. (no it was not in lost and found).

There was a blue bag full of gear that was brought to the men’s changing tent. I think it may have been used as a transition bag - though I never looked to see what was in it. It had a name on it (can’t remember it), but no number, so I put it with the other lost and found stuff in the changing tent. All the lost and found stuff was retrieved by someone, but not sure when or whom.

thanks. My bag was blue. Maybe I can call someone who has more info. I tried without any luck to find someone to talk to who may have info but only found the transition stuff on the upper deck. (which had no bag) Anyone know who would be a contact lost stuff?

No
I was busy this year and didn’t make the race.

I personally didn’t have anything stolen, but how about what I noticed and heard going on.

The morning after the race, they had all the SN bags ligned up and laying around. I know of one person who went through a bunch of them and scored about 70 brand new tubes, a whole SN bag full of c02 cartridges, etc.

Also they said that in the bags they saw brand new cycling shoes, helmets etc…they could have been taken by anyone at that point. So…you need some extra gear, just hang around and go through the SN bags the next day…of course i’m being sarcastic!!

I’ll echo those thoughts from last year…among the minor complaints I had, one of them was the complete and utter lack of security with regards to those bags post race…

…but having said that, it is also made clear at least in the race pamphlet that there’s no guarantee you’ll get those bags or their contents back, so in other words be prepared to lose whatever you stick and there and don’t use. However, I could not imagine the incredible amounts of bad karma you’d pick up if you were to go through everyone else’s SN bags post-race…

As for other thefts, there were none of note that I heard of last year…

There are IM races, Kona for example, where the only thing you are allowed to put in special needs bags are food stuffs. There really isn’t a good reason to put other stuff in there.

After the race we were commenting on how easy it would be to supplement your gear. When we picked up our bags ~7pm there was hardly anyone back in the corner by the pickup area and many of the bags were wide open. It would have been very easy (with little risk) to pick up a few key items. Hopefully this didn’t actually happen to too many people.

Did you have your name on the bag? The bag I saw had a name on it, but I can’t remember what it was. You might contact IMNA at their HQ’s. But since it was not in one of the controlled areas, they might not have it. I’ll talk to one of the guys I know and get him to look for it in the warehouse.

A funny story about people leaving items behind. An athlete came up to me after he finished and said that he left his sandals on the beach before the swim. And wanted to know where he could pick them up. LOL

I didn’t tell him that I didn’t know that IMNA had someone that collected sandals left on the beach and kept them safely.

Just so you all know, my wife was standing near the SN run section to cheer me on. For the folks who took their SN run bag and ran as they took stuff out, and then threw their SN bag down by the other hotel, my wife watched as a cleaning lady from the other hotel simply grabbed each bag and THREW IT IN THE TRASH. I would recommend NOT putting anything you care about in your SN bag, bnut if you do, please leave it close to the SN volunteers who were trying to put them away where they could be retrieved at a later time by the racer.

I saw the same thing at LP and Panama City…people rooting through bags right after midnight. I put the minimum things needed to get me by and don’t go back to look either.

Funny though, in IMFL 2004 I went back to the finish late with my older brother who had never been to an Ironman before. Just to see the craziness at midnight. I had pitched an old t-shirt along the route, during the race, just in case I needed it. It was in the open with alot of people nearby. Of course it was still there!

Replying to you since you first mentioned it, but what does “SN” stand for?

special needs.

Thanks. I feel like such a newbie.

Rick,

I would appreciate any help you could give. The bag was an award from a triathlon. I talked to Melody (via email) from the IM Fl site. She said no items had been delivered to her yet. So anybody that has connects to the L&F items maybe could help me. Thanks again.
