Vizsla owner here - like many triathletes. We seem to see them by the dozen when we go to big races so thought I’d throw this question out there.
What do you feed your Vizsla for dry dog food? We are currently on Blue Buffalo but my vet noted several law suits etc against them. What is your go to?
We have two active dogs and we feed with wellness. The whitefish one in the blue bag. We like it because they offer a fish protein only one. Zero problems with it and even our picky dog will eat it. Not vislas but a lab and a eskie
Merrick’s dog food is good. I feed my pup Orijen. Honestly, she probably eats better than I do. The food smells to holy hell, but that’s because we get the 6-types of fish version… all wild caught, never frozen canadian fish. They have other flavors too.
I’ve been feeding Eukeneuba to my German Shepherd for 15+ years. That and generous helpings of table scraps and handouts while I’m cooking. He loves things that you wouldn’t expect like radishes, carrots and asparagus. We still go for 45 min walks every day.
My family has been debating a dog for a long time, and I think I just about have my wife sold on a Vizsla. Great with kids right? What kind of miles can your realistically run with them in a week?
I feed my Vizsla and Komondor PetSmart’s Authority Grain Free for large dogs. Neither has stomach issues, overeats, or really ever seems down. It has the best price of grain free dog foods that I found. The price fluctuates from $17.99 to $19.99 depending on sales for 15lb bag.

Vizslas are great with kids. Mine was awesome around my sisters kids.
You have to build them up to running with you but I used to run every mile with my guy when he was 3-8. During that time I normal week for me is 40 miles and sometimes hit 60 during build. He did all workouts with me including speed workouts. He was a bigger Vizsla but didn’t have any trouble keeping up with me doing sub 5 min mile repeats. I would bet that I could have built him up to run 100 miles a week, if I could handle that type of mileage. During winter I normally run trails and I bet he ran at least double if not triple the distance I did because he was always off in the woods chasing stuff.
We’re on our second Vizsla and my inlaws are on their third. We fed our last one California Natural and had great results. Our current one is just 4 months old, but we just started him on Natural Balance and it seems to be working out well. My in laws use Call of the Wild and have also had great luck. Of all five dogs, three are deceased and they were all put down between 14.5 and 15.5 years, so we’ve had good results.
For a Sunday treat, we give Merrick’s canned food. I mutter the word “Sabbath” and ours goes wild, normally running into the pantry door.
I know it wasn’t the OP, but whoever asked about how good they are with kids, we had our son when our last Vizsla was 12. We were careful because we thought there might be some jealousy, but we never saw even a hint of it. The puppy came along when our son had just turned 2. They’re best of friends, but the tails of his shirts have a hole or two from games of chase. We’ve never seen any aggression toward kids, or really anything other than an unlucky rabbit, from any of the aforementioned 5 dogs.
Our Vizsla is about a year old - we keep his structured road running miles low right now due to hot pavement, but on a cool day he’ll go 5-6 without issue. He tells us when he has had enough. He spent some time at a bird dog trainer as a pup and was doing 12-15 miles + /day. Granted in a training session, but they are more than capable for any distance you throw at them…
Never had a more loving dog. Never had a dog with more energy. Vizslas NEED structured training and a lot of attention.
