THE TEMPUS IS HERE

Storage is SO tough… so many patents around water storage and stuff

Do you really need more than 4L of liquid/hydration on your bike at any given time? That’s a ton of liquid with 4 liters.

Maybe? I figure that I need 5L for a 5H IM bike, assuming normal conditions (or at least that’s what Dr. Harrison’s app tells me).

In the past, I’ve done a concentrate and then mixed with water at aid stations, but in my last IM, I mis-measured on the fly and then spilled a bit while mixing. I tried topping up with on-course nutrition, but the stomach didn’t like it.

This year, especially with Mortal not being the best replacement if something goes wrong, I want to try making everything up in advance and just drink to a schedule. Keep it super simple and nail the nutrition - after which next time I can worry about concentrates or whatever. I’ll probably just carry half of what I need and then stop at special needs, so I won’t put all 4L on at once. But if I could squeeze out another litre somewhere (or close enough) that wasn’t clear cut aero penalty, I’d be set

I love the Speed Concept, minus the proprietary not-so-adjustable front end. The internal storage is perfect, only room for gels and tools, with no finicky internal hydration bladder to worry about. I was really hoping the Tempus would be similar yet with a more adjustable Profile Design front end. The front end looks excellent, but I hate bolting stuff onto the frame to make it work for long course.

Oh well, different strokes for different folks. It’s still a cool bike.

the stand over of a Small is more than a size 56 P-series.

Am I off ?

787mm (56 PSeries) vs 790mm S Ventum

Is there such a thing as too much weight on aero/$?
The sole purpose of a tri bike is to go faster.
If it’s just about having fun/completing then a road bike is fine for tri. The moment you consider a tri bike you’re looking to buy speed. So logically the first question is 'how much speed can I get for my $"…

I would go further and say that many popular bikes are in the can’t optimise easily category - the ones that make me wince when I see them listed on the pre-fit questionnaire.

In the case of the Tempus - Ventum have been clever. It’s very easy to start adding proprietary parts to a bike and before you know it - the thing is $1k more expensive (to pay off moulds and the unit costs of parts). Plus the MOQs on plastic parts mean you can be sitting there thinking “I haven’t got any frames in stock but I do have 2281 bottles waiting for frames to go on”

By concentrating on delivering a fast but simple frame Ventum are giving riders the choice. Plus, the bike will get more adjustable over time as PD add more options.

For instance - the Wing Ultimate S - S means short…
There is a new bracket coming with more adjustment
The top tube flask will get a cage that has a nose cone
More storage options will become available
(note that all these things are on a 12mth timeframe so don’t hold off on the bike waiting for PD updates)
Barrett doesn’t have to worry about tweaking all these things - it’s my job to continuously improve the PD parts of the equation.

The Tempus is a platform to build on, not a closed ecosystem like the Speed Concept that can’t function outside the design bounds.

You are safe with X, it is N that will get you in trouble.

Is the stand over exceptionally high on this bike ?

The small has higher stand over than a size 56 PSeries

Is the spec above correct ?

Thanks

I’ve apparently been living under a rock . . .

The 170 max length is an interesting choice. For those of us with longer legs, they aren’t making it the easiest bike to consider. I’m on the verge of spinning out 172.5s (down from 175s on my previous bike). Totally get the fit element here, but implementation may be a bit extreme.

On the other hand the high stand over height makes it harder for someone with ‘shorter’ legs

826mm standover means 32.5 inches for a medium. I am not sure what rule of thumb fitters use is, but I thought it was 1inch. So that means max 31.5 inch inseam.

PSeries in a 56 is a good 1.5inch less. Top Tube on the PSeries also slopes down so there is an additional inch there.

I can probably squeak by. I am 5’10 with a 32.5 inch inseam, which I thought was ‘normal’. Seems like it’s a long legged person bike. Would be nice to hear what the Ventum folks think.

Looks very similar to the Plasma 3 in many ways?!?

The standover is going to be higher than some other bikes like the P-series. What is driving this is shrouding the top tube with the back of stem and the integration there. We worked on both aero optimization and simplicity in that region quite a bit to arrive at the geo we have. While there are top tube bosses, we also didn’t want to just force a bento in that region for all customers and then call it “optimized”. This isn’t something we took lightly, but when designing a bike it is always a balance, and we realize it may not work for everyone. The minimum pad stack/reach across range is still pretty competitive when compared to others, even in the small.

It’s difficult to spec a bike perfectly for everyone. The market is certainly signaling they want shorter and shorter cranks, and we are adapting our specs to accommodate this. It has even proliferated into the slow-to-adopt World Tour which will likely continue to spill back over into OE spec.

Having said that, we do allow our customers to select their crank length. On the Spec you prefer (Force, Red, or Dura-Ace), you can click “Customize my Fit” and for a slight upcharge select 172.5 crank to change the spec. You can even go back to 175 if you would like. We made this exactly for people like yourself that have different fits needs to what we spec on stock builds.

That’s a blast from the past. So glad we have all moved on from rim brakes mounted in the BB area. Ourselves included.

Thanks for confirming

I am 5’10 with 32.5 inch inseam

I would have 0 clearance on a medium, 1.5inch on a small. The small reach is suboptimal for me.

What is the fit guideline for stand over ? I read 1inch, but I am not sure how closely people follow this guideline.

It depends how low the ‘jewels’ are hanging :-).
To be honest, the year I worked for KU my TF1 had a very high top tube, when standing at a traffic light it was a nut scratcher but I got used to that quite fast and after a while it didn’t bothered me anymore. Although, having a Cadex now I’m not sure I want to go back to that high

Are you 6’6" or taller?? What inseam length are we talking about here? And I would think if you dropped down one gear, you would not be spinning out… (-;

Pad stack range in size Large on the website must be an error, right? 688 should be more like 648-ish?

And how can frame stack and pad stack being measured to the same point in the geo chart?

Jeroen

the bike is looking good at Oceanside
