The TDF Upside-Down Sunglass Helmet Thing

I know that many of you people are wondering why all riders in the Tour place their sunglasses upside down in their helmet vents.

It is not because they are trying to be eccentric, it is because placing the sunglasses right side up in the helmet vents obscures the riders vision and is a total distraction, which, of course, is not what you need during a 3600KM bicycle race.

By my calculations, you will gain 12.8 watts over 112 miles by doing the same thing.

thank you
.

You are welcome. it’s what I do…point out the little things that most people overlook, but can make you fast…for free!!

What do you gain by taking them out of your helmet and wearing them on your eyes?

or throwing them into a ditch
.

Actually when using Oakley Jawbones and Bell Sweep or Volt helmets it is because putting them in right side up allows them to fall out of the vent pretty easily when looking down. Inverting the glasses provides a much more secure junction.

I’m not sure if you were just trying to be a smart ass or not, but there is an actual reason the guys do this

first of all a lot of the riders take their glasses off to climb because in hot weather with a hard effort they get totally covered in sweat and become more of a distraction. Now when they take them off they usually place them upside down in the helmet vents for two reasons. First of all they seem to hold better in the vents that way and second you don’t have the lens hanging down over the edge of the helmet getting into their periphrial vision.

the lens hanging down over the edge of the helmet getting into their periphrial vision.

Exactly. That’s what I meant about obscuring a riders vison.

I do not know.

The pairing of sunglasses with bicycle helmets is beyond my current level of aerodynamic knowledge.

But I do know that all riders in the Tour place their glasses upside down in their helmet vents when not wearing them over their eyes.

Baseball players and golfers have been doing it for years … guess cyclists are just catching on. It has nothing to do with aerodynamics by the way.

Now we know the answer to that question.

Can you help me with the following?

Why do “gangstas” wear baseball caps with the bill cocked off to the side?

Nah they arent just catching on, cyclists (well it became popular with Lance and Hincapie) have been doing this for 8+ years now.

I would like to know why they (and many others) wear their glasses on the outside of the helmet straps. To me, the apparent ‘no brainer’ would be to wear them inside so that they are more secure.

Enlighten me, oh chosen one.

You will do anything to keep the topic off your Lance picks

Baseball and Golf…two games that are hardly ‘sporting’ contributing at least something to the toughest sport in the world…I admire that kind of generosity.

This allows the helmets to be secure without the tightened straps to push the arms of the glasses into your temples.

Most glasses are plenty secure over the straps because of the rubber arm covers or the shape of the arms alone. Other than cobbles days, these guys are not really getting jarred around enough to require something more secure than that.

That, is a very good question.

Again, being intellectually honest, (as is my custom) I do not know the answer to that question, as I am an authority on the Pro Peloton, not a fashion critic.

However, I have noticed that “gangstas” who wear baseball caps with the bill cocked of to one side also tend to fire their sidearms horizontally (because they think it looks cool) as opposed to firing their sidearms from the more traditional (and accurate) vertical position.

I am an Authority on the Pro Peloton, I am not a Psychologist. Your question is like asking: “Do I wear my goggles over or underneath my swim cap?” - “Which came first, the chicken or the egg?” - “Which side of my toast should I butter?”

When I am riding I wear my sunglasses outside of the helmet straps, but this does not mean that you should. I have noticed that people who wear their sunglasses inside the helmet straps only do so because they have very poor memories, as wearing your sunglasses outside the helmet straps requires you remember that you are wearing sunglasses (and remove them) before taking off your helmet.

I just can’t do it. I keep trying, but I can’t seem to pull it off. I think that and the fact that I can’t change shoes, change jerseys, get stitched up, and eat lunch all while riding with no hands are the reasons I never made it on tour.
