The Shiv 3 - slower than the Shiv 1

Cancellara’s new Shiv 3 was just built up for the Tour of California.

Looks like they are keeping the Shiv 1 in production for now, for the benefit of the Tri market.

So, would anyone planning on purchasing a Shiv even consider the new Shiv 3 (assuming they only compete in TRIs)?

Every time I consider something newer and the ‘latest greatest’ I can’t get past the fact that bike drag is the baby of all drag factors. Body tweaks are free and make a much bigger difference than a frame in my personal experience…it’s not even close. I suppose if I ever hit the text book, perfect body position AND my body is in the best shape I can get it in AND saving 30 seconds becomes that big of an issue I would consider a Shiv…even though it’s one of the ugliest bikes I have ever seen:/ I do like watching Spart get ‘ugly’ in TT’s though…deep blue hero stuff.

Since when has Cancellara added ~60mm of spacers? That must be another teammate’s bike.

Maybe, it is a crapload of spacers.

But this pic comes from the same set

The name does look longer than the one on the full bike pic though.

Interesting that they are so upfront about the fact that the Shiv 3 is decidedly less aero than the 1st generation. There is also a definite sense of annoyance in the fact that they even got to the Shiv 3 in the first place after the initial changes made for the Siv 2.

He’s always had them:

60mm of spacers is still VERY low on that bike.

Hehehe…look at that fork crown…Hey Specialized, I’ll have my consulting fee transferred to my PayPal account, please. Or, the “use” of a Shiv3 for next year’s races would suffice

To be honest, that;s what turns me off most about the Shiv. Since their sizing differs in reach only and all bikes have the same stack, at 6’3" I’d have to run a ton of spacers under the pads. I run FIST-approved 15+cm of saddle-bar drop, but by my measurements I’d still be on the upper end of the Shiv stack range, which means lots of spacers. I guess they did that so they’d only have to make one fork/nosecone setup for all the bikes, but it’s a turnoff, especially compared to the other superbikes out now where it’s not an issue. (Trek, Scott, Felt etc.)
