The PRO Missile, good and bad experience?

Hi,

Im looking at a great deal on a PRO Missile but not convinced because of a first look at it, without trying it, I find the padding on the armrest minimal for comfort and also the ajustability seems to be limited.

Anybody wants to share a good or bad experience with it and some pros and cons?

Not to support my potential purchase but for some interesting facts and experience on a setup you don´t hear that much about.

Collette system for locking the extensions is unacceptably weak.

The pads ARE as bad as you think.

Go Hed Black-D

Just my opinion

TomP_imc makes two valid and correct points. I have the Missiles, pictured on my bike below.

The elbow pads are minimal but adequate. I’ve never been really uncomfortable on them, but then again, they aren’t great- just adequate which may be all you need.

The collette tightening system for the extensions worked fine for me, but they need a little anti-sieze on the extensions and you need to tighten down the clamping collars for the extensions with a large jawed wrench and work carefully since they are aluminum and are easily damaged by the incorrect wrench. We used a very large crescent wrench and ultimately wrapped a thin shop towel around the nuts to prevent scratching. It’s a delicate procedure.

The HED aerobars are likely a more robust choice across the board. They clamp much better and accept a plethora of aftermarket and HED manufacturered extensions for customization. The pads on the versions I’ve seen still have an odd “flip-up” capability that is not of much use. A friend of mine, Joe C, did an ingenious job of securing his in the downward position using zip ties and a little self adhesive cork pad underneath the elbow pad support arm. Worked perfectly.

Both systems have their benefits. The HED system is likely a lot more ready for prime time.

Here’s my cockpit:

Thanks TomP_imc, for your input.
That locking system does have its flaws and their construction is weak. But th idea is not that bad and on the positive side it is a good solution
ajusting wise since you don not have to cut anything. Maybe we will see an improvement of that in the future.

Hey Tom,

I knew you had the PRO Missile on your build there. Good reading by the way.

Thanks for the input on the tightening of the collette ring. Thats a job for a handy man, it appears. I was attracted by the good deal and also getting a fully integrated one piece carbon cockpit. A spontaneous thing really. Today my bike is fitted with a PRO Synop aluminum base bar and a HED flip lite clip on, as you mentioned. The HED clip on is great except for the “flip up” function" and the extensions did not swallow the 7900 Dura Ace bar end shifter expander. So I had to go custom on that sanding down the inside of the extension. To remove the “flip up” function I created a sandwitch construction adding two extra small “aluminum donuts” (dont know what you call them) on the bolt in the joint holding the arm for the armpads. That created extra pressure when tightening the bolt fixing the extension.

I think I will wait wit the PRO Missile and maybe look around for a Vantage 8 base bar.
