The Official, All-Encompassing September Swim Thread

yes, definitely faster in a wetsuit. I have actually been told to get a pair of wetsuit/floaty pants instead of using a pool bouy, which I have just ordered.

It’s not that uncommon Prince

Pull buoy and paddles most people are faster

Just want to reduce the gap between pb and swimming times

Did a set today long course 3 rounds as 8x50 100 200 300

50s doing faster rating and 400 pace
100-200-300 just resetting the stroke and getting it lengthened out. Was nice doing the changes and finish with 345 on last 300 on 31 strokes per lap

Yep, for almost everyone it improves your body position in the pool. I’d be wary of relying on either a buoy or floaty pants as they are a bit of a crutch rather than trying to improve body position. That said, fair enough if you basically race in a wetsuit so that frankly doesn’t matter.

Last week swam a bit more than usual, about 12K. My shoulder paid for it especially after Saturday but it’s 90% better now…Still took today off from planned swim

Friday :35 2k scy
300 ez, 6 x 50 on 1:00 as descend 1-3 4-6
4 x 300 as buoy band paddles odd swim even
200 ez

Saturday 2:15 swimrun session, 4100 ish swimming (all paddles) 5 miles running

Thought I’d check in here on the last day of September. I’m still at it…today was 280 consecutive days of swimming, now about 600,000 yards for the year.
I raced 4 times in September and finished up the multisport season yesterday with an AG win at a pool swim tri at a state university in Wisconsin.
It was a good season-15 races, (12 sprint tris and 3 duathlons) 15 podiums. 10 AG wins, 3 second places and 2 thirds. While the 65-69’s don’t have the greatest depth of field, the pointy end is always tough and I have a lot of respect for those who are still out there pushing each other. I hit 425 triathlons since 1985 this summer and am looking forward to 2025.
Also just wanted to mention that I truly believe the whole season was set up by the swim volume I did in the first 14 weeks of the year. My run speed has certainly declined, but the aerobic base that swimming provides is a silver bullet at this age.
As always thanks for starting the thread TC and I hope you will soon find your way back to health…and the pool!

Got in 3400 SCY in 60 minutes for last day of month.

1000 (14:38)/200IM kick
10x100P on 1:30 (1:13-18)/200IM kick
16x50 on 60 alt. free and stroke/200IM kick

Back at indoor pool now until next May

I created quite the stir at the pool the other day. The older ladies who do water aerobics while I do my swim workouts now keep a very close eye on me.

I decided since it was off season for me and it had been almost 5 months since getting my pacemaker……I told the dr thanks to the slowtwitch community to bury my device low and deep so it doesn’t bother me swimming……to try swimming a combo set of five 100s with 50 fly/50 back. Unfortunately when the ladies show up they double the extra lane dividers in the lane I was swimming. On the third 100 during the 50 fly I didn’t get my arm out of the water because of course I was doing to much first time back doing the fly and hit my hand on the lane dividers. A combo of being old and on blood thinners added to the excitement as my hand started to bleed down my arm and the lifeguard had to patch me up as the ladies checked to make sure I wasn’t going to die:-)

It took that darn hand a full 10 days to fully heal and I got the look from the Tuesday/Thursday class every time I showed up:-)

That’s an unreal streak there Mark, and great job on holding up the 65+ in so many races too. I just looked at my log and I have 144 swim days in this year with about 480k yards, and I thought that was huge!!!

My last swim of the month was actually an OW race where I swam two legs of a mile each on a 10 mile relay. Water was only 60 but we could wear wetsuits so no big deal for me. But other 60+ guys were chilled even with the suits on. I just swam ok as I had a bit of heat stroke from the previous days trying to bike in really hot weather and doing a cram block for my one and only upcoming triathlon. Did go a minute faster on the 2nd one, so was happy with that, and my old age brought the team up into the 60+ division which we won…So Ya for September, bring it on October!!!

These posts about yards for the year got me curious

Took a look at mine just getting close to a million yards at the end of August

Did an 8 month focus almost zero biking and running until the beginning of Sept

Good news Approx :15/100 faster on all workouts for swimming VS Jan 15 of this year

Lots of yards and one on one swimming lessons.

Bad news running and biking times have fallen off a Cliff. Let’s see if we can get that back in the next few months

heading state side in a few days, should be fun. cant say i will get the hang of this whole yards thing y’all do but will be fun

last or second last meters set as 40x50 ‘the grant hackett set’ then about a 1km broken up just in 100s 150s and 200s with plenty of rest just long stroking procrasting getting to work
