The Mental Side of Triathlon: Staying Motivated

Triathlon is as much a mental challenge as a physical one. How do you stay motivated during tough training blocks or after a disappointing race? Share your mental strategies, routines, or any advice for pushing through the low points.

For me, the journey is why I do it.

I’m a pro at my job and I’m a pro at being a dad. Meaning, I HAVE to show up everyday for those

I’m happy everyday I get to do this sport. Some training days are great. Some training days are a slog. But I just keep reminding myself that the consistency is what will make me better - no individual race, workout or interval matters that much. It’s the compounding work, and showing up everyday

Basically, just focusing on the positives =)

I am just looking for an excuse to do fun, but difficult things, outside…
Under the ever changing, mesmorizing sky
Across the surface of the beautiful mosaic of Earth

Racing to the “peak of my ability” gives me a great excuse to train.

Training is a great excuse to be outside.

Pain is temporary. Posting on social media about your triathlons is forever. /pink

never ever struggled with motivation… this is what I do for fun, it’s all jam.
My father questioned my sanity after my first 50k race aged 18, said it seemed all very difficult to him. But, that 50k was the easiest thing I did all week, compared to navigating daily life…

things got very hard after 60, way more pain than seemed reasonable.
But as John Gierach wrote in another context,
“although I’d now and then wonder if I was getting too old for all this bushwhacking and rock scrambling, there I was doing it, so apparently not.”
