Kind of thought this would be the case after we got a refund for nations like two months after the fact
.

I’m so PISSED!!! Did early registration and hopefully I get my refund back sooner than later. Never again will I register for a Escape Triathlon event. Piss poor customer planning on their end when it’s in April and they cancel in December. Geez…

Hello,

We are sorry to announce that the 2019 Surf City Escape Triathlon, scheduled for April 28 at Huntington Beach, California, will no longer be taking place. Due to low early registration numbers, we have made the difficult decision to cancel the event.

As a registered participant, we will provide you with a full refund (inclusive of registration fee and USAT one-day fees, as applicable). Refunds will be credited back to the credit card used to pay for your initial registration. The refund process begins immediately: please allow 7-10 working days for processing and expect to see a credit on your next billing statement.

We apologize for any inconvenience this cancellation may cause, and are alerting you now to allow ample time to add another race to your calendar.

We understand you may have been planning for Surf City to serve as your qualifier for the 2019 Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon. If interested, you may opt-in to the 2019 Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon waitlist HERE.

Thank you for your support and understanding.

If you have any additional questions, please email us at info@escapeseriestri.com.

Sincerely,

Des Moines was the first city they dropped, I was sad to see that race disappear as originally it was HyVee, then HyVee 5150, then just the Des Moines Tri where they still brought in the pros and AG’er still got prize money. Now nothing, I really enjoyed racing/staying in Des Moines.

DELMO, CALLING DELMO!!!

PLEASE PICK UP THE PHILLY RACE AND RUN IT BETTER.

It was my first time in Philly and really enjoyed not only the race but spending 4 days in the city. If they had another pro race I’d be back. For what its worth, Escape Surf City was a genuinely fun event and nice course.

People have lost real money and jobs over this. You are going to receive a refund and suffer exactly nothing. And yet you think are the victim?

Piss poor planning would be hoping registration would pick up, spending more money, canceling in March and not being able to offer a full refund. Undoubtedly had it unfolded that way you would have been sympathetic.

Does this mean lifetime is becoming the WTC of short course?

No particularly surprised by this. Every escape series race I’ve done has been sub-par and felt like they were cutting corners and being cheap. Thats why I mostly stopped doing their events despite enjoying those races before they took over. It felt like it was only a matter of time until they went under or started dropping events.

I guess. No $$$ in any of their races besides New York though

That was basically the exact same language they used when canceling their 2018 event in the Lake Geneva, WI area. It had been an Escape Series race and a TriRock race until 2018 where Premier Event Management (PEM) was attempting a non-series event. PEM has managed all of the Escape events (please correct me if I’m wrong) and had managed the last year or two of TriRock. I honestly felt like their 2017 Escape Lake Geneva event was done very well compared to the the first few years of TriRock around 2012/2013.

Anyhow, I don’t think ‘low registration’ was why their 2018 Lake Geneva race didn’t happen. Somebody that works for one of the towns/townships that the Lake Geneva event spanned claimed that PEM owed them well into the 5 figure range from the year before and they refused permits shortly before the ‘low registration’ email went out. Part of me doesn’t want to believe that with how long they have been around and how many events they do. They have also had pretty strong presence here in the midwest. I’m also curious what they charge for permits and police up there to get up to the 5 figure range. When we priced out another sprint and olympic event just a little south of them, we couldn’t get anywhere near that and I’m guessing we would not have needed much less of a police present since our course is an out and back and theirs is a two loop with roughly equal town/rural split.

Anytime race choices are lost is a bummer. Starting new stuff sucks too.

Even as a destination race, Alacatraz doesn’t seem to fill with qualifiers only or even lottery slot awardees… I’ve received e-mails to enter their lottery and every one I know that entered the lottery “got in”.

I’m from the DC area and had hoped to do Nations sometime but that may not happen now.

That sucks for everyone involved. Escaped seem’d to be doing everything they could to get pros money/attention and did alot of “partnerships” with it’s pro series. I was disappointed with them when they pulled the prize money on race day and put it in another race because they weren’t using the money to reimburse AG athletes, but putting it into another race, and I figured that was a bad move to put your “partner” out to dry so to speak.

Nations tri has imo been a disaster almost every year, and not a knock on the race organizers but seemed every year we would know the swim would get cancelled and it would.

Thanks Escape for providing what you did for pros in the time you did. I don’t know what pro olympic non-draft there is in the U.S. now.

Cam Dye retired just in time.

Weren’t some of these races pretty hit and miss anyway?

Basically just NYC and the new los angeles tri. And of course escape from alcatraz

I will interview him this weekend

Alcatraz was the “championship” race it seemed for the Escape Series, so it was pretty much only letting in a certain # of pros to begin with. I think they used the other races to qualify for Alcatraz and/or some pros were “invited”?

Kinda. They let anyone in with a valid elite card

Awesome!
