The End of Ironman 70.3 Boise

Wife did this HIM last year while I spectated. GREAT city and fun race. Probably the nicest 70.3 run course I’ve seen yet. I was hoping to get to race there in the near future. Shame.

I raced it this year - glad I made it there before it got cancelled. It was a fun race and getting in and out of Boise was a breeze but they needed to improve logistics. Having T1, T2 and the finish in different locations was a bitch.

It’s too bad - there seems to be a burgeoning tri-scene in the city which hopefully doesn’t get crushed. But with less than 900 completing the race it can’t come as much of a surprise to anyone.

Bummer, one of my favorite 70.3’s.

That is too bad. My parents live only a couple hours away from there, and my dad really wants to see me race so I was thinking of that one.

I guess this helps explain part of their decision:

.

Well that’s a questionable decision. Here we are looking at it being iffy whether they’ll be able to pull the event off in late June and they’re moving it to August. Nice. I’m a local and may consider doing it again next year, but seems like a crap shoot with the weather being too hot.

A big part of it was that Boise’s convention bureau (or whatever they are called) was paying WTC twice what they pay any other event to come to town and wanted to negotiate a lower payment. WTC must have gotten a better offer from CDA.

But you’ll have more time to acclimate and you’re more likely to know what you’re getting yourself into.

Well this blows, was planning on doing both CDA and Challenge Penticton next year – now it’s either one or the other.

Too bad. I live 7 hours away. Always planned to do that race. Didn’t two years because I was injured, wasn’t ready that early a couple of years, had another race at the same time further 2 or 3 years, this year crashed a month out. Boise was always a good reliable stand-by within a road trip range. Besides I only ever had a late start race once and fricken loved it. Wanted to go to Boise if for nothing else but the late start. Oh well.

They had 1200 compete (with teams). I know, I was #1138.

Thanks for coming, and hope you had a great time. We had the best water / weather combo in 8 years this year. Mother nature finally got it right.

The T2 got moved this year due to construction on the road into town, normally its in the park where you finished.

Kills us locals to see it leave.

I was on one of the relay teams and flew in from Texas to compete. I really enjoyed it and was hoping for another chance to race it sometime in the future. I wonder if Challenge or one of the other groups will pick up the slack and try to continue the race? I know my brother was hoping to do the full race by himself next year, so he is really disappointed that it was not renewed.

Mine too. Crapshoot with the weather but a great ride and one of my favorite runs. Sorry to see it go.

The Ironman 70.3 Boise was always doomed from the beginning.

By scheduling a 70.3 two or three weeks before a a full ironman (CDA) within the same region, WTC failed to recognize that the majority of people interested in checking these items off their bucket list would have to choose between one or the other. The financial, time and fitness investment is too consequential for most Idahoans and Pacific Northwest regionals to participate in both.

Under the old schedule, Boise 70.3 would have been a great option as a September race for the people prepping for CDA the following year. Also, September offers a more reliable weather.

Under the newly released schedule (Ironman CDA in August), Boise 70.3 would have more than ever a chance to thrive if scheduled in mid-June.

WTC needs to learn about a simple business concept: cannibalizing your own customers is nooooooo good.

Yes, we locals are sad to see it go.

…Boise 70.3 would have been a great option as a September race for the people prepping for CDA the following year.

I disagree. Most athletes don’t do a half in September as a tune up for a full the following June. Too much time in between, not to mention the off season.

Under the newly released schedule (Ironman CDA in August), Boise 70.3 would have more than ever a chance to thrive if scheduled in mid-June.

You are correct, but if the rumors are true (Boise visitors bureau didn’t want to pay the fee), it seems that the leaders in Boise have made a similar mistake that the Penticton leaders made.

WTC needs to learn about a simple business concept: cannibalizing your own customers is nooooooo good.

You are correct and IM knows this…that is why there aren’t both a Boise 70.3 & CDA 70.3.

.

Not to mention the cannibalization with Victoria 70.3 (pulling the PDX / SEA crowd north) and Boulder 70.3 (pulling the CO crowd) on the VERY SAME weekend as Boise this year. Boise was established LONG before either of these races. What were they thinking is gonna happen??!?!?

Even when we were 3 weeks out from CDA, people just won’t do both. They tried to “pair” Boise and CDA unsuccessfully for years.
