I’m going to be high-maintenance until this is healed
sorry not sorry and I’ll try to make up for the needed love and attention in swim help for you all. I’m trying to get a Jones fx to heal without surgery if you missed my other threads asking for help.
I got my bone stimulator yesterday. (For others with broken bones - this was $1000 out of pocket, which is a LOT less than I expected). I was told to wear it for at least 3 hours a day and more is fine, though it will have diminishing returns after 3 hrs based on their research.
I wore it for about 5 hours yesterday, could feel some sensation (not pain, just sensation), and my foot is a lot less swollen this morning than it has been in the past couple days. Not that swelling is necessarily bad, as it’s part of the healing process, but it was just nice to (a) feel some sensation so I know the thing is not a dud LOL and (b) see some progress.
I would KILL to go for a run
or a swim
I miss it like mad. I am allowed to do upper body lifting and core work so I’m trying to focus on that, and add “knocking out pull ups” to my set of party tricks. But I really miss running and swimming
I guess I could maybe try some one-legged cycling on a recumbent or stationary or spin bike but I don’t want to hurt something else or develop weird imbalances on one leg (?)
Thanks for listening. I’m going to try to focus on the positive of what I can do and not focus too much on how I would sell my soul to go for a run.
AMA swim related and I’ll do my best to answer; I’ve got a bit of time on my hands right now
Great to see this news. I hope it works out for you. My sister had something like that when she broke the bones in her feet years ago in a car accident and it must have helped because she is walking just fine.
Good luck, don’t forget to use it!

LOL. I’ve been acting like a toddler carrying around a favorite blanket or stuffed animal.
Great to hear. What manufacturer and model?

That says “arm wrist and hand” but I think it is the same thing as I can’t find anything that says “foot, leg, ankle”

Do you wear it on your foot??? From the “How it works” section of the web site: "The PEMF signal is produced from a coil built into a fabric garment that is worn over the fracture or fusion site. The garment can be worn over clothing, casts, or braces. "
Assuming yes, can you walk with it on over the boot??? Or do you take the boot off when using the stimulator???

Yes, I am wearing it on my foot, wrapped around it with the big part of it right over my 5th metartarsal and the strap around my arch. I was told I could wear it over the boot but my (irrational) brain wants it as close to the bone as possible.
Also, I’m laying on my deck in a swimsuit playing Porch Illustrated, and the boot would be really hot.
Note: I am not walking in the boot. I’m on crutches so as to be completely non weight bearing. Objective: Avoid Surgery.
FWIW I used an exogen bone stim on a broken 2nd metatarsal about a decade ago. I was initially told I would be off for 12 weeks; was cleared to run at 7 weeks. Those 5 weeks made it worth every penny.

Thank you for sharing. I am hoping for a similar miracle of modern science.
How many days after your fracture did you get the bone stim?
At what week of x rays did you start seeing healing? I’m pleading with the running gods for signs on healing on June 16, which would be 13 days of bone stimulation and 4 weeks post injury.

How do we know it’s not placebo effect? I too broke this bone 3 times. Told 8 weeks off. Back running 4-6 weeks. I feel diet more of a factor. Vitamin K from natural sources easily over looked

I’m not darkwave but I’ll take a placebo effect or a real effect, as long as I get an effect
Petrach, you said you do medical research. Do you know off the top of your head the minimum time at which I might expect to start seeing some healing on x rays?
This is Magnetic Pulse Therapy, it increases the oxygen utilisation of the cell etc and improves healing. Most of the research studies were done in NZ with regard to its effects on the healing of fractures etc. As a therapy it has a substantial use in the equine sports performance world with specialist blankets and leg boots.
20 years ago, l fractured my tibia skiing, I borrowed the magnetic boot that l had bought for my horses. I used the boot every day, a couple of one hour sessions for around 10 - 12 weeks prior to surgery for the ruptured ACL. The fracture healed very well, and the knee joint was in good condition for the op. I told the surgeon about the magnetic boot, but he was quite dismissive and said do not use it after the op. I waited a while for the graft to settle ( 8 weeks ) then used the magnetic boot again. I had a very good end result and l still use the magnetic boot for sore legs etc.

Are you honestly saying that the placebo effect has a relationship to bone healing after a fracture??!!
I can see how placebo effect may help reduce symptoms of a fracture etc but I think it would be pretty safe to say that the usual 30% placebo effect does not have a role in objective x-ray informed signs of bone healing??
so what you’re saying is I’m basically a racehorse
fascinating that these were first used for horses. My googling shows those look like mostly just magnets - I think what I have is electromagnetic.
if it’s just magnets the horse version would be cheaper!
glad it worked for you.
You would not believe the advanced medical and therapeutic stuff we use for horses, joint injections, laser, shock wave treatments etc !
The magnetic boot l used is made by Centurion - it has a power battery in it, so when the boot is in place, the power causes the magnets to form a magnetic field around the injury site. There are lots of static magnetic products but these are weaker in achieving anything, to be honest.
Some horses just love their magnetic blankets - we use them in transit as well, the horse comes off the truck, relaxed and ready to go with warm back muscles etc.
given the money involved in racehorses, it isn’t all that surprising. It is cool!

Very interesting, thanks for explaining. The crutches provide a nice triceps workout, I’ve been on them about 4-5 times for various injuries during my life. I have no medical expertise to share but just based on you being extremely healthy, I suspect that you will heal just fine and be back to running and swimming in a fairly short time. Maybe a little more swim and less run though once you’re healed???

Thank you for the well-wishes and the confidence. I’m also very hopeful that being really healthy and active will help. As someone pointed out on my other thread, theoretically athletes ought to have better blood supply to their feet. (The potential problem with the location of this fracture is it’s in a low blood supply area).
And yes, more swim (AND BIKE) and less run once I’m healed.
I’ve been wearing this bad boy since surgery – Orthofix.com. Two hours a day. Kind of cumbersome to do much of anything while it’s on. I think I’m supposed to wear it some six months. No awareness that it’s actually doing anything, but my surgeon says I’m healing fast. Hope you have great results with yours.
