The Best $40 I've Ever Spent (AKA My Bike Light Review)

Here’s the light setup I’ve been testing for about a month. There have been a few posts regarding light setups, and this thing works so great for me I thought I’d share my little review.

Here are the details:
Light: MTE SSC P7 900-Lumen 5-Mode Super LED Flashlight $37.70
Batteries: TrustFire Protected 18650 Lithium Battery (I bought 4, the light uses 1 and I carry 1 or 2 as backup) $5 each
Charger: Ultrafire wf-139 Lithium Ion battery charger 14500 - 18670 $16.95
Bar/Helmet Mount: Twofish Lock Blocks $12.95/3pk

I originally mounted this to my bars and that worked fine, but decided to move it to my helmet because I feel more confident in corners when the light points where I’m going. Also, I can throw the bean on a driver’s windshield if necessary. I mounted it to my helmet with the TwoFish LockBlock and then played around with rubber bands and a wine cork to get the light pointed exactly where I want it to go. It’s not that pretty of a solution, but it works perfectly and it doesn’t rattle around at all. I can unscrew the tail cap to remove the battery without having to remove the light from my helmet. I’ve got 4 batteries, so I just labeled them 1 through 4 with a Sharpie marker and I rotate them out after every ride.

In the pic above, the P7 light is on the left, that’s a NiteRider Trail Rat 2.0 in the center (great light but shitty battery system), and a Cat Eye OptiCube on the right for size comparison.

The light isn’t very heavy at all (less than the Nite Rider) even with the battery (which is lithium ion, so pretty light).

The only pic I have of this light in action so far is this:

http://i43.tinypic.com/s27ak0.jpg

That’s the light (on high mode) sitting on the hood of a Toyota Corolla with its high beams on. On high, the P7 is brighter than cars.

Low mode is perfectly fine if you just need to be seen. I haven’t tested it fully, but I’ve gotten 5 hours out of low mode so far (I hear you can get about 9, but there’s no way I’m doing a 9 hour night ride to test). Medium is what I usually ride on, and I’ve gotten at least 3 hours out of it (I haven’t tried anything longer yet). On high mode I seem to get about an hour before the output starts dropping pretty quickly to what you see on low. I carry at least 1 and sometimes 2 cells when I ride. They go in the zip lock bag with my cell phone in my jersey pocket or I just toss them in my messenger bag. There’s also a strobe mode, which strobes very fast on high mode, but I think it’s not really appropriate for traffic as it annoys the fuck out of drivers rather than just alerts them to your presence. When you’re out of traffic and on dark roads, the strobe is so bright and fast that I get vertigo. There’s also a useless SOS mode if that floats your boat. You cycle through these modes by turning the light on and then halfway pressing the tailcap to momentarily break the circuit. Sounds a lot more complicated than it is.

How bright is it while riding? It’s bright. I ride with friends who have Dinotte lights (get a Dinotte if you can afford it) and this is every bit as bright as those (Dinottes are sexier, have a better mount, are smaller, and have longer run times). I did a group ride last night (kept the light on low most of the time), but when I was descending a hill I flipped the light to high mode. On a dark road with no street lights, I hit 39mph descending and had no problem being able to see the road ahead of me. At 39mph I’m not outrunning the light.

The light has a great mix of throw and flood, so I can light up the road way ahead of me but at the same time a lot of light spills out to the sides. In summary:

Pros:
Crazy brightLight weightInexpensiveCrazy crazy bright3-9 hour run time on med-lowBrightUses 18650 cells, which are light and provide lots of energy

Cons:
1-hour run time on highUseless strobe and SOS modeOrdering from Deal Extreme sucks balls. Very long shipping time (they’re in Hong Kong, so you can’t really complain about that), but the charger I ordered wasn’t the charger I received. I eventually ordered from Battery Junction who were super fast. Not the most elegant of mouting solutions, but there are better ways to mount it.Uses 18650 cells, which you have to buy online or find a specialty battery store (apparently most laptop batteries are just a bunch of 18650 wired together)

Ditto. I have the same stuff. Its awesome. Cyclist ask me what I am using. I love telling them how much it cost. I felt kind of badly when that conversation happened once in a LBS. All the people looking at $200+ set ups were looking at my light with jealousy. I run on high most of the time, but switch it to strobe if a car cuts me off or something. It really gets their attention.

The best performance vs.value light system out there!

Expect about 2 weeks delivery from Hong Kong (to Canada). Free shipping, little or no duty - a bit like PBK.

I replaced a 20+watt halogen with a Trustfire TR-801 (230 Lumen claimed) and couldn’t be happier. It’s the light recommended by off-road trail riders because of the phenomenal spill pattern. This one tiny light actually betters the old halogen by a long shot and at $18 is an absolute steal. Then ordered another Q5 led (c2 body) with ‘throw/spot’ optics for a total of 460 claimed lumens.

With ‘flood’ on the bars (the $3.00 DX mount works well) and ‘spot’ on the helmet, it’s the best set-up I’ve ever used and goes for about 3hrs before I have to swap batteries. Riding in the dark at any speed I care to go is no longer an issue.

The MTE or P7 emiters are even more powerful (read blinding) and you have to be careful where/who you point them at!

At any rate - I’ve been really happy with both the batteries and lights from DX and have to say that everyone who’s seen them in action is blown away.

I’m considering buying one and finding some red cellophane to put over the lens, and then using it as a tail light. I’ve also seen the Bull Nova LED strobe that’s used on the lightbars of ambulances and police cars. It’ll work for several hours off of 3 of the 18650 cells, you just have to find a way to mount it, which shouldn’t be that hard.

That’ll all take a back seat for a while. My next purchase will be a couple of Pro Race 3s, and that’ll keep me from spending anything for a while.

thank you for the review
I have been looking for something that I can use both on my helmet and on my handlebars
.

For the price, I’d buy two and put one on the bars and one on your helmet. Last night I rode without the Nite Rider on my bars, and the week before that I rode with the Nite Rider. Although the P7 on the helmet is enough light, I really like the extra spill from the light on the bars.

Hi
would this work as the charger?
http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.1251

Figure I would look at dealextreme since the charger itself cost over 8 dollars to ship but dealextreme has free shipping.

Yeah that’s the exact same charger that I ordered from Battery Junction. I ordered from Battery Junction on a Saturday and received it on Tuesday, choosing their cheapest shipping method. With Deal Extreme I ordered on December 7th and didn’t receive the order until December 31st, and then I realized that they shipped me the wrong charger, so that’s when I ordered the charger again from Battery Junction so I didn’t have to wait 3 weeks for them to correct the issue.

Oh I should mention that when you’re buying 18650 cells, it’s worth the extra cash to get protected cells over unprotected cells. The protection circuit built into the battery helps prevent the cell from exploding or catching on fire. That’s a great way to be noticed by cars, but my head doesn’t have as long as a burn time as the light.

Also, I would get that charger or one of the good chargers made by Pila or Maha. You want something with independent charging channels, and most importantly you want a charger that will shut off when the cell is fully charged. Even then, with a protected cell and an auto-shut off charger, I still don’t leave the house or go to bed when they’re charging (which is OK since I have 4 cells and work from home).

I’ve forgotten to take it out of the charger at night a couple of times, though, and so far nothing bad has happened. If I don’t post back in a month then ask Pantalones what happened.

I promise to write your ST obituary if your cranium mounted laser torch literally melts your face off.

For my eulogy you have to say “Bryce_D always said…build a man a fire, he’ll be warm for a day. Light a man on fire, he’ll be warm for the rest of his life.”

Then you gotta pour some of your 40 out on the sidewalk for me.

Deal Extreme = free shipping ALL THE WAY from Hong Kong - cheap gear = Does Not Suck ‘Balls’
.

I got one based on this review. I found acrylic lenses for my p7-c on flashlight lenses.com. I don’t feel comfortable with the glass lense. The lense is 35 mm. I’m waiting for it to arrive. We’ll see if it fits.

P7s are awesome. There’s a light called the “Magicshine” which has an integrated charger/batt, and is even brighter than this flashlight, and sells <$100 from US online dealers. 3 hrs at that brightness, too.

Keep in mind if you order from Dealxtreme, that it’s caveat emptor all the way. Meaning that you buy at your own risk - duds are to be expected occasionally from them, at a significant rate.

Hi Guys
Your set up is very good and the price is right but I just have to ask Where and Why do you do a 3 hour night bike ride ? I’m really not asking to be a dick or anything I’m just really curious. I’ve been in this sport a long time and had my share of early morning and late evening workouts but 3 hours in the dark-- Lord have mercy…

Ever tried a night MTB trail ride? Coolest thing ever. You definitely want to have extra burn time in reserve; even if you don’t plan to be out there 3 full hrs…
