Hey all, I just asked a shop here in melbourne about purchasing the new Look 596. Now it has been quoted at $4999 US with their cranks and peddles. The shop told me though beacuse of the doller i would be looking at close to $10,000 for the same framset package. This can’t be right can it?
Sounds a bit too much, but for sure bad timing buying with Aussie dollars. You need to look for bike that were shipped to Aus when the dollar was good, so old models should be much better value.
I have done a bit of research on the net and the are estimating the Australian doller to be up over 90cents to the USD by Feb 2009. Your thoughts
I have heard that it is probably at its low point. But I have also hear a lot of people in the bike industry saying there are going to be big increases in price for 2009 bikes.
shops here in australia are ridiculous…framesets for Cervelo P2C are around 3500, where in america they are under 2! surely the dollar plus importing doesnt double it
same with cars. why does a porsche 911 cost over 200k here, when its closer to 100kUS? they are both imported from overseas…
I used to work in a bike shop and had it all at my finger tips. But none of these new bike’s were avaiable at the time. What i own was one of the best available. Now that i want to move on i either need a kind sponser or to win the lottery. I think its best now to e-mail everyone and everyone looking for what you want. then respond to them telling them of the best price you been offered and let them fight it out to offer the cheapest price. Someone has gotta give. Used to be all about loyalty and the more you spend at a shop the more discount you get… not sure this is still the case. I think atm is best to wait it out for our doller to climb. i thnk in 6months times things will settle down. Will more new bikes fighting for riders to buy them and our doller to reach a better point i think things might improve.
“more new bikes fighting for riders to buy them”, this is a good point, there seems to be more and more competition in the high end bike market, but I am not sure if this is going to bring prices down
I recently priced a trek in Aus And it was about 1K more than the US RRP, In my mind thats not cool. In Aus I think there is about 5% import tax on a bike, then 10% GST, plus some additional shipping cost. I am thinking that for a brand like Trek the Aussie distributer is another cost as in the US there would be no distributer - just straight from Trek to the shop.
Yes you are right, i worked at a bike shop for nearly 4 years. For example if you looked at say the Trek TTX frame
and was priced at $3,800 (not quoting just an example) which we would say for arguments sake $5,000AUS
you wont be paying $5,000 to purchase it it in Australia. not taking the value of the doller in consideration you still pay for transport, tax, imporing fee and some shops would put adiition charge for the fact your buying in store and pulling it out of the box. Sad that in australia we get charged more. this used to be where being loyal to a shop helped
Loyalty can still pay off …
I bought a Soloist SLC-SL back in May, when AUD>90 cents. At the time the frameset was listed at $4500US at R&A (where I have usually imported my stuff from). I saw they were $6900AUD RRP. I called my LBS and he said he could do it for $5k. THe US conversion put it around 5KAUD and then there would have been about $200 postage on top, so I got it cheaper here than I could have imported it from anywhere in the world at the time (I also had checked UK and Europe).
Doller? Peddles? Is this what the australian education system has come to?
Good for you… I am sure the Aus bike stores know they are competing against the online shops.
Another thing one has to remember when doing the online purchase is that if something goes wrong you will have trouble claiming warranty in Australia…

Dollar and pedals THERE YOU GO LAZY BEN - Yes LAZY is okay on a forum. good job
Thats a good point about having trouble with warrenty!

A Porsche is not a good example to use. A Porsche is cheaper in the US than anywhere else in the world including Germany. Porsche long ago, protected its number one market by hedging the Euro/dollar. They make as much on currency trading as they do selling the car. That is why there are the most profitable car company in the world.

You might want to stick the first e back into frameset whilst you are at it too. I’ll let the missing apostrophe in That’s go since you used one unnecessarily earlier but you really should be able to copy the correct spelling of warranty from the previous poster!
Wow, what a unique response. Atack as a form of defence. How about brushing up on your writing skills so that we can understand what you wish to convey? To think that I responded to your other post about frame weights, what a mug.
See you when you graduate from kindie.
So this is what the Poms do instead instead of getting out there training. sorry i am having trouble finding a profession athlete from england, of course besides wellington who has done the sport for 2years and won 2 world championships. Hmmm, i think some people are questioning how this has happened… alot of us aussies are questioning how. maybe you can let us in on the secret
I’m half aussie…but do you remember who beat Australia at the last Rugby world cup? (I’m half french too…so I remember really well)…
Geee…I’m stepping up to defend a bloody pom…
By the way, your comment on Wellington sure isn’t classy…
Oh dear. Did I upset you sweetie? A little tip for you: if you don’t want people thinking that you’re an idiot, don’t be one.
sorry i am having trouble finding a profession athlete from england
By the way, I’m having trouble finding a “profession athlete” from anywhere…could you please explain what that is?
Macka86: Just use a US bike shop and have them ship the bike to you. Also please do not post again as you are making me look stoopid ![]()
