I was thinking about my diet this week, and I realized I have only had 2 servings of meat all week. I had Lamb the other night and Chicken last night. Then I started thinking back and realized I am damn near a vegetarian, and I don’t know how I got there. I eat lamb or sushi a couple times a week, but lately the bulk of my diet has been grilled vegetables, veggie patty wraps, and muscle milk shakes. I know some dont count you as a vegetarian if you have dairy, but still, I was raised eating meat 3 times a day. Has working out/triathlon changed anybody the same way?
PS I have ben eating apples lately as a meal replacement. They keep me surprisingly full for a while.
We support local small agriculture because i think its the best thing we can do right now. Small/Local, then organic. Organic must be grass fed. This is milk and eggs and cheese and butter. Stealing cow’s milk is not ideal but we are very used to it and its a huge part of our diet, but it is on an entirely different spectrum than force feeding them with #2 corn until they are about to blow up.
Have a training partner that said she owed much of her performance increase over the last year to turning totally vegetarian.
I asked what she did for protein balance. She said she ate fish…
I asked what she did about calcium intake. She said she drank milk and ate yogurt…
Later, she mentioned that her doctor advised her to eat more red meat. Some periodic testing showed some deficiencies. So, she was eating meat once a week.
I think the definition of vegetarian has evolved from what it once was. Apparently, the definition is pretty broad.
So, when I hear someone today say they are a vegetarian, I really wonder…
The definition hasn’t changed just more people call themselves that for whatever self serving reason they come up with.
I eat cheese on occasion, eggs on occasion, I love Greek yogurt but never drink milk or put it on my cereal. I don’t check for diary in ingredient lists and when I go out I don’t order vegan unless there is something already pre-made on the menu that is. I don’t call myself vegan because I only eat SOME dairy. I am a vegetarian and have been for 15 years.
