Thanks to Slowtwitch from Shumanmo and The Recyclery

I just received the following message from The Recyclery, with the request that I post it on Slowtwitch. I’d like to add my own thanks. The final figure donated to the Recylery was roughly $1,415. I have to agree with the feeling of the Recyclery that I feel humbled to have received the level of support from Slowtwitch represented by that figure. Thank you for your donations and thank you Chip for organizing this effort. But I would also like to thank Dan for letting my son’s disappearance be a focus of Slowtwitch and thank Slowtwitch members for the support you have given me since I first posted a note last October about Paul. There were many times when I had second thoughts about bringing this matter to your attention. But the chance that one of you could locate Paul or offer a suggestion that could help our search outweighed my reluctance to make my family’s personal life a public matter. As it turns out, we received some excellent suggestions that formed the basis of our search activities and many Slowtwitch members took it upon themselves to help in the search. So I have no regrets. But what I hadn’t expected was the massive outpouring of support both publicly on the board and in private messages to me. That support inspired me to keep up our efforts during our search. After Paul’s body was discovered, there was another barrage of public and private messages consoling us. My wife, daughter and I will never get over what happened to Paul, but you have all helped soften the blow by making us realize that there are people around the world who are complete strangers to us, yet who were willing to take the time to try to help and comfort us. For that, you have my deepest thanks.

MESSAGE FROM THE RECYCLERY

Dear Slowtwitch community,

We are extremely humbled by the donation you presented to us in remembrance of Paul Shuman-Moore. Your spontaneous organization of the memorial fund has been extremely inspiring to us here at The Recyclery. We are thankful for Steve’s gracious direction of the memorial funds and the generosity of you, his comrades. This donation will help carry on our work of making low-impact transportation more accessible, as well as spreading the joy of bicycling and promoting ecologically-responsible lifestyle choices that Paul chose. Specifically, we were able to use the majority of the money to buy an upgraded tool set with more professional tools. With these new tools we have significantly expanded our shop space and work area, which allows us to have more volunteers and staff working at once and increases productivity. The remaining donation has been put towards the pay of a volunteer-turned-staff-member who is developing and running an after-school program with a local high school. The program runs ten weeks this summer and brings in six youth considered “at-risk” to teach them bike mechanics. At the end of the summer, the kids will each receive the bike they worked on for the duration of the program. Thank you all so much for your gifts.

Sincerely,

The Recyclery Collective

Steve,

What I think we can all agree on in light of the heartbreaking news of the last week and the loss experienced by our little community is that we are, despite our best efforts, all good decent human beings who care ultimately more for our friends, real or electronic, than we do about carbon frames and aero wheels (dare i risk being attacked).

A big thanks to Chip for raising the money and for bringing the ST community together to pay hommage to Paul.

Those six kids are so lucky to be chosen for this program. Hopefully this will have a big positive impact on their lives. I wish they would race at the end of the summer… a little ST-style smackdown is always called for…

Your family has been dealt one of the hardest blows in life. I cannot even imagine your pain. I can only send you my deepest sympathies and my love.

Hello Steve, we hope that you and your family are doing well and I am sure your son is watching all of this with a smile!
