Tell me about Wyoming or Salt Lake City

Looking for a place to take the wife and kids (6-16yrs) on a long weekend trip for their Spring break, and thinking about Wyoming or SLC.
Dates would be last weekend of March - March 28-April 2.

Cheyenne or Laramie area would be easier to do that SLC, just because of driving distance.

Would there be any open hiking trails, or is everything still snow-covered? Would xc skiing still be doable? Would there be anything of general interest for younger kids and non-outdoorsy wife?

Everything will still be snow covered in SLC. My recommendation is Salt Lake City, there is much more to do than in Cheyenne or Laramie. You will definitely be able to do some cross-country skiing. You can take a nice day “hike” up City Creek Canyon, spend a day in Park City. The Temple grounds are nice to visit as well…Salt Lake is a very welcoming to visitors. If you choose to visit SLC, I highly recommend having lunch at Tony Caputo’s (downtown) and Cucina (2nd Avenue)…what type of accommodations are you looking for…?

It has been nearly 30 years since I lived in Wyoming. I remember lots of snow on the ground in the upper elevations, even into May. In fact, got stuck in snow and mud on Memorial Day weekend while driving my 4WD in the mountains.

Not sure that there is enough to do in Cheyenne, Laramie for a spring break trip that doesn’t include snow and mud.

I would highly recommend Salt Lake City over Cheyenne or Laramie. Nothing against Wyoming, but there is not a whole lot to do in those towns.

Another option would be to drive down to Ft Collins or Denver. Much more to do and only about an hour or two down the road from Cheyenne.

Thanks, drn92

Yellowstone
.

despite what was said - everything will not be snow covered in SLC late March; mtns of course will be but not the valley although it is one of the snowiest
mths - 2 days after storm snow will be gone in valley; Mid 50’s late March
Yellowstone - roads would still be closed so snowmobile only
.

sounds like you are driving from SE of WY and SLC - - - it’s not likely, but you can still get stranded in that area that late in year

Why not head South - or have you burned thru that area?

Thanks all.

I agree about weather unpredictability - and I guess it can be too iffy w.r.t. outdoor activities as well. I was planning on doing a summer hiking trip out that way, but was wondering if anything was doable in early spring. Definitely hoping to hit SLC area this summer.

Maybe heading more southerly direction for a spring trip.
