Techies: Learn me up on wireless range extenders pleasey

Not sure if that is the correct term, but my mom and dad need to extend the range of their wireless signal. Router is upstairs and I’m going to be putting an Apple TV in their downstairs entertainment room along with a new smart TV. So…getting signal down there is probably going to be an issue since dad’s laptop is very sketchy down there now…leads me to believe so would an Apple TV.

Does the extender need to be line of sight to the router? Other issues?

They use one of the latest greatest Netgear N routers…please advise on feasibility and compatibility issues…or otherwise.

Thank you!

Are they using a dual band router (2.4 and 5 ghz)? You may have enough signal with the 2.4 band as the 5 ghz band has greater attenuation due to walls, distance, etc.

If you opt for the repeater, you may have some bandwidth/latency issues with streaming. It’ll likely stream fine but you may not get the best picture.

If it were up to me, I’d see about moving the router closer to the TV in the downstairs room or possibly running a wired connection if at all possible (especially for streaming devices like Rokus and AppleTVs).

Do routers broadcast in a certain direction more than another? Like if you lay it flat on a counter is it stronger upwards? Downward?

Most router antennae are omni-directional as far as I know. You can purchase directional ones as an aftermarket product. I don’t have any personal experience with them though.

Powered antennae to add on to your router, wireless repeater, plug-in units that use house wiring… What you should probably try first is this:
