Anybody out there having problems with their TYR Hurricane wetsuit tearing easily ???
I just about tear mine every time I put it on now. It’s only a year old, never been in Chlorine or left in the sun and I have NO fingernails. This is the only suit I have that tears so easily, especially in the thigh area where the neoprene is thickest. I’ve repaired it at least half a dozen times now.
How do you put the suit on? I have a TYR Hurricane, have had for a year. I only pull up from the inside not the outside therefore reducing the risk of tears.
I guess I’ll give that a try, but I’ve never had to do that with any of my other suits. I have a full sleeve Speedo, and two Orca suits that I put on the same way and never a tear.
Thanks for the Idea !
I do the same, only pull from the inside of the suit and so far - one year in - no issues. Another thing I have done in the past was buy some mittens at Wal-Mart to use when pulling it on. I found them in the ladies section and they are like $2 for 2 pair. I keep them in my wetsuit bag. They add a little layer of cushioning and keep your fingernails from making any contact. Plus, on a cold race morning its not the worst thing in the world to have them. At about $1 a pair I can wear them down to the start line and hand them to a freezing spectator or just not worry about losing them. Same thing for Wal-Mart flip flops. About $2 a pair and nice for those races with long walks to the water.
I had a Tyr hurricane Cat 5 and it was the most fragile suit I have ever seen.
Multiple small tears the first time I put it on and more every time I used it.
I sold the suit for cheap and would not consider another Tyr product until they do something about this issue. FWIW I have had three other wetsuits and have never had any issues with tears or fingernail marks. It really is the suit and the material it is made of.
Fragile is exactly what I would call it, I like suggestion of mittens…but I surely shouldn’t need mittens to put on an expensive wetsuit. I’ve emailed TYR but have yet to receive a reply. Think I’ll just buy another sleeveless suit for Placid next month.
Yes, my TYR cat 5 sleeveless tears very easily in the crotch area without me touching it directly while pulling it on. I don’t think it’s anything to do with TYR, unless they are buying the cheap batches of rubber. I’ve had other suits of the same rubber type hold up really well, and some that are supposed to be more fragile (#40 vs #39) hold up without tears and I abused them.
One great thing about my Desoto, never had a tear yet, but if I do, they fix for free.

Why would you not think that it has something to do with the Tyr product? Multiple people who have never had an issue with tearing their wetsuits suddenly have huge issues when they switch to the Tyr product. Including you if your post is correct.
Whether it is the rubber they are buying or the construction or who knows what, the fact is that the Tyr Hurricane wetsuits are too fragile for regular use. At least in my (and others) experience.
TYR Hurricanes have a lot of issues when it comes to tearing. Especially at the seams in the shoulder/chest area. I have owned a Blue Seventy Helix, TYR Hurricane Cat 5, and a Aqua Sphere Phantom(Current wetsuit). Out of the three, the TYR was honestly the most comfortable, but was biggest pain in the ass when it came to getting tears, especially in the seams. What completely did it in was the suit tore at the base of the zipper where the zipper is stitched to the suit. In my opinion, TYR’s wetsuit construction is horrid, everything from where they place the seams, to the stitching. As a race only wetsuit, I think it’s good, but when you start taking it on and off a lot, the suit goes down the drain real quick.
Only because, in my case, the tears are right in the middle of a panel on the thickest part of the suit. So I’m assuming that doesn’t have much to do with construction but the integrity of the rubber. It should be the same Yammamoto #whatever is on other high end suits, so without more data, either owning more TYR suits, or knowing they buy the cheapest batches (and I don’t know that they are quality graded at all, either), I would scratch it up to any material defect. If my issues were always with seams, zippers, or tears because of bad fit, then yeah I would definitely blame them. I’m not sure based on what I’ve seen that there is any more issue with TYR suits that similar high end suits from other manufacturers, or that they just have a crappy customer service relationship which hurts their perceived quality.
Doesn’t some of the higher end neoprene sacrifice durability for buoyancy and flexibility? It might help to lube up your thighs with Bodyglide or whatever my wetsuits are pretty tight there. If I get rushed putting on any wetsuit, I seem to get a tear.
Actually, many of the higher end suits (not just TYR brand) come with a pair of mittens for putting them on. The more flexible rubber is inherently more fragile and therefore many higher end suits are more susceptible to fingernail nicks and tears.
These aren’t fingernail nicks, any pressure at all on the surface with my fingers causes the neoprene to come apart in 2" gashes. I own a $700 full sleeve Speedo I bought when in the UK and it’s probably more flexible and buoyant than the hurricane and I could drag it behind my truck on the way to the race with less damage than just trying to gently put on the TYR. I do agree they sacrifice durability for other desirable traits but this suit is ridiculous and almost impossible to put on without damaging it. I also have an Orca that’s almost 7 years old and I’ve only had to repair a small nick in it once.
My attempts to get TYR to respond have also gone no where.
