Tattoo before Marathon

So, I’m not going to be in the pool anytime between now and the NYC marathon. So, my question is how long after a tattoo can I start running, or better yet, running long? I probably will be going under the needle Friday.

depends on the location of the ink. think of it as an open wound, because basically that is what it is. if youre not going to have a ton of sweat and dirt get in it, you should be fine in a day or two. youre body is going to use its energy to heal the wound so take that in to consideration with your performance and dont be let down if your not on pace

Awesome idea, and super original too. I don’t think I’ve ever seen one of those on a triathlete.

I have a full arm sleeve that (now that the season is over) is currnetly getting more work. Besides swimming, I have never stopped working out due to new ink. I have been out running and/or biking the next day. Just wash up with a good (fragrance free) soap IMMEDIATELY after working out and apply Aquaphor for 2 days following the needling.

OP should just get the tramp stamp IM. It would be a new look.

I’m still rooting for the ING lion. I hear marathoners get them all the time.

Ask the tattoo artist what he or she suggests. I ran 12 miles 2 days after I got my last one but its on my arm may be different if you get it on your leg.

it would be just for your eyes sweetheart

I got tattooed today and just got done running. I get work done frequently and run, bike, swim without issue. No big deal

Brother, just a piece of advice, don’t get that stupid tattoo, you know what you did, your family and friends know what you did. Be good with that, don’t conform it’s kinda retarded to be honest. I’m not bashing people with it, just giving my opinion. Oh and no worries about working out if you do get it, in fact run more cause it is my goal to run down and beat everyone I see with that tattoo in Road Races LOL ;>)

I was thinking the same thing…very original…

I dunno, judging by your awesome screen name, I’m not sure you would know what to put where…

I know I am going to get railed for this, but…

More power to you, if you like it and want to do it, F*(K what everyone else says. You should be proud of what you did and if this is your way to commemorate it great! As one person mentioned, it does become somewhat of a target, but all tattoos are personal and should have good stories and memories. No it is not original, yes you will be judged, but you should do what you are happy doing.

For me…I have been planning a tattoo for awhile and now that I completed my first IM I am going to add to it, but in a way that only I will know what it means. Another example - my brother designed his tattoo of a native american orca. everything in native art is symbolic for the tribe. So for the eye of the orca he designed an M-dot that you would have to really look for to notice.

Good luck, have fun - and ask your tattoo artist. The last thing you want after getting one is to ruin it!

I’ve often wondered why only men get the M-dot tattoo? I’ve seen a bunch of women triathletes in Ironman races with awesome ripped bodies with tattoos all over but never seen one with an M-dot. On the other hand I’ve seen a lot of men (many big football type guys with huge arms and chests) with an M-dot either in their arm or leg or shoulder.

Hhhmmm… perhaps… ?
