Tapering for IMC and feeling flat!

just wondering if this is normal? i started tapering last week but my last couple of runs i have just been feeling flat! it feels like i cannot get my legs going? is this all part of the tapering or am in some trouble? thanks!

Are you doing any intensity? In my experiences, when tapering you need to keep some intensity to your workouts, but reduce volume as you approach your goal race.

First one, eh?

Nomal. Totally normal.

Taper tantrums should start this weekend. Your cat and significant other should hate you by Monday.

God bless Ironman.

thanks for the input! i am doing intensity stuff, its during my intensity runs that i am feeling flat!

Maybe you need more rest…?

I’m also tapering for IMC and my intensity sessions feel wicked awesome. But I also make sure I get enough rest.

AP

are you in M 25-29?

Just back from my lunchtime run and I too feel flat - because I raced on Sunday and I need more rest. So I stand by my original suggestion: more rest. I bet you have just finished your “last” long ride and/or run recently right?

Ap

stick to your training plan and dont cut on the duration and intensity. In many case… to take more rest as some have suggest is the worst thing you can do…

Taper isnt holiday… it s hard work…just shorter one…

to keep the intensity up and decrease volume and training load until race day is the best way to feel strong and sharp on race day…

and really, no one here have enough info on you right now to give you a good advice…

but yes, it s normal to not feel great 10-14 days out of your race… your mind also often just overanalyse everything…

Eat two pickles, have a nap, read a good book, visualize your awesome finish and the satisfaction of a great race.

Ignore feeling a little wobbly and get your rest!

A CO2 cartridge stategically applied will alleviate that flat feeling.

Love the responses! Ha! Much of this is probably normal. You’ll feel quite tired the week of as well. That’s OK. Get a solid brick in this weekend, then keep it light and short all next week.

And as already suggested, visualize and remain positive!!

I agree with the person who said to stick with the training plan. I think IM tapering plays with your mind and your body. Just stick with the schedule and don’t freak if your workouts don’t feel right. What you are experiencing sounds like a typical taper, to feel lousy and get anxious. All of a sudden during taper, some little twinge feels like a huge body meltdown; you start to second guess your training; you get irritable; and you gain 2 pounds. Guess what, it’s normal for a taper.

Especially don’t try training MORE than what is on your schedule, especially when you get to the race location a few days ahead. At the race location, tons of athletes are out there hammering away and wasting their training, their taper, and their race. Resist the urge to overtrain at race location just because everyone else seems to be out there training way more than you.

Like he said in the original Star Wars… “Keep on target… keep on target” and hope you end up as Luke and not the other guy.

Yes it is normal.

It only feels like you can’t get your legs going!

You are not in some trouble.

You’re welcome!

I SMASHED it in my last 100mile ride yesterday and felt great…am I in trouble!!!

At this point, the day will be what it will be! Stick to the plan and you’ll come around. Have a good one!

thanks everyone for your responses! i feel a bit better, i will stick to my plan and hope for a good race! have fun everyone on race day!

I signed on hoping there would be a tapering thread. I sort of feel flat too and I can’t physiologically understand how all the long distance training I did won’t be lost over the next two weeks. I’ve done one ironman before and felt the same way, but it’s scary everytime. I don’t even think about tapers for half-ironmans.

I was just perusing some old threads, and I wanted to bump this thread, because this post is worth reading again and filing away in your databank of good advice.
