T100 Champ Marten Van Riel Sets His Sights on IRONMAN

Shoutout to Bart. No one ever talks about this guy and he rips a performance like this.

Son of a bitch - I was like…what is this guy talking about??? Lange shouldn’t TOUCH the T100…then realized which WC you were talking about lol

So, should he have just dnfd after that crash? Seems a shame to not do justice to his first IM, but was anything to be gained by hammering out the marathon? Is he not racing Taupo?

Anyway, I’d guess after not having the day he wanted he’s going to be fired up for a redemption race.

I mean…did he hammer the marathon? Hopefully he is good - but it’s now off season and he knows a lot more about IM than he did 16 hours ago!

I think he had already stated previously that Cizumel would be his last race for the season so, no, can’t be racing Taupo. Might wish he had chisen sifferently now though.

It really is funny how US centric some people are and don’t even realize it. The irony of using NFL as the analogy is just hilarious and perfect to describe Ironman’s position in triathlon.

Did anybody see the crash - video or IRL?

I mean, a crash can of course be bad, but how did he loose 20 mins on that? Make the bike was screwed?

Either way, massive kudos to MVR for getting back and running so fast after that!

On the last PTN podcast they got the info from MVR manager. Said he was looking back then clipped some sort of plastic barrier and crashed. In the crash he hit a small girl on side of the road. He stayed with the girl for 10 minutes before medical arrived, then police made him wait another 10 minutes for a statement. Girl went to hospital but sounds like she is fine. MVR also went to hospital after race for stitches.

Oh wow - poor girl! Well done from Marten!

So what do you guys think about the issue: should Ironman give van Riel a Nice slot nonetheless? The consensus on PTN (Mark and Pat opined and Kyle didn’t challenge) was that they should “obviously” give him a slot due to “extraordinary circumstances”… and that the crash may have been his fault but the hold up wasn’t.

My uninformed and ignorant opinion (based entirely on what Mark Matthews said about the situation on the ground): what the actual F? You crash, you don’t finish 5th or better, no slot.

And the holdup was entirely Marten’s fault - in fact he should count himself lucky to be able to finish the race and get paid (chump change, admittedly, compared to what he made in Dubai and the T100). You put someone in hospital, you should expect to spend hours in a police station. Pat suggested that Ironman should’ve put barriers between him and the girl (and then the hold up wouldn’t have been van Riel’s fault, you could argue) but did so without knowing how far the crash happened from T2.

I like Marten van Riel a lot. I feel sorry about his crash and not just about the girl getting injured but also his own problems. It’s just that there’s nothing extraordinary about losing time due to a crash. Even if he hadn’t caused it, and then he did.

Not to mention that nobody knows what place he would’ve finished in. You cannot just subtract 20 minutes from an athlete’s time.

Hold up or not, and I cannot find it in IM rules, but I’ve seen in a few athlete guides: if there’s an accident (= crash incl. body damage), you must stay until police arrives. He did what was right, but also what was necessary.

Sorry for the girl and sad for him, but that’s not the end of the world. Eventually he was healthy enough to run a marathon with a competitive pace (hard to tell how much he pushed and how much the crash affected him, positively (20min rest) or negatively (bruises & stress)). If he’s so determined to race IM WC Nice, he’d have to qualify somewhere else.

Yrah, nah, he crashed… his fault. Not like the kid ran out infront of him. Have another try to qualify next year, thats how it rolls.

PTN pod @ 10:50 - all the detail you need

You can see the argument for a pass to IMWC for MvR but.
Crash his own fault: if it wasn’t, pass would be a shoe in.
Delay was a delay, without the option.
From IRONMAN perspective they have to consider what would be the result of a ‘pass’ or not.
MvR will race the T100 Tour in 2025 and zero Ironman races (Marbella clashes with the T100 GF so no point in racing a 70.3).
(I’m assuming here the men’s IMWC is in September (wherever).
With a pass he can race IMWC with the only downside is a result in T100 Ibiza: is this the best option for IRONMAN.
Without a pass he has to earn a slot in a 2025 IM: to race Ironman: isn’t this the best option for IRONMAN? Gets MvR to race one of their races; mucks around his T100s and the T100 (I guess Texas is the best option, a fortnight after Singapore and 5 weeks before San Francisco). Downside is that he chooses to give 2025 IMWC a miss: how much of a downside is that to IRONMAN? (Not much)

Turns out he got a drafting penalty according to his IG. As they caught the front pack, so he then had to stop for 5 min and try to go again.

If I were IM, I would offer Van Riel with a slot to troll the PTO/T100 series. Imagine the statement it brings that the reigning champion of a series, who remains a favorite for next year, is willing to risk 100s of thousands in payday just to race the IM WC in Nice not even Kona.

Except MvR will not be risking anything: London is early August and the men’s IMWC is on 14 September (6 weeks later). More or less the same as for Philipp, Matthews, Sodaro and Pierré this year. How would MvR racing IMWC “risk [tens] of thousands”. Au contraire, MvR presumable would wish to race IMWC to finish well up and win prize money in Nice.

Pos’n Prize
1st $125,000
2nd $65,000
3rd $45,000
4th $25,000
5th $20,000

Perfectly reasonable to then miss T100 Ibiza a fortnight later: the contract will require racing (speculation) 6 of 8 regular season plus the GF in November. The key difference (expected) is that far more will score: was 3 this year and likely 6 next year.
Blummenfelt and Iden are ducking the challenge he poses in the T100. He wants to go and beat them in Nice.

Most of the men, several of the women who did IMWC are destroyed. To do a grand final in that condition is a very risky proposition.

If you don’t care about the WC, sure, dial it back. If you don’t care about the Grand Final, sure. If you truly care about both you are taking a big risk

If he’s willing to shave the moustache, then IM should consider him qualified for the WC considering the circumstance.

No way. Nothing screams more French beach holiday that skinny guy with a creepy mustache.

Well then he needs to redo his tri-suit and lean into the Asterix look. some stripey bottoms and some vinyl wing stickers on his helmet would be AWESOME! …I think I just found my project for the day.
