Swollen lymph node (groin) or something else?

I was dealing with a mild adductor strain on my left side the last few days. But this had healed pretty much overnight. However, yesterday I was doing groin stretches because of the adductor strain (something I usually don’t do). Later in the evening, my right groin felt sore. I thought I just overstretched it. But its still bothering me this morning. I was able to run without causing pain but I noticed that the area is very tender to touch and there is a lump when I press on it. I am wondering if this is a swollen lymph node. I’m not sick (no fever, cold, etc). But I have been training pretty hard the last few weeks. Can you get a swollen lymph node from overtraining? Or is this just a strained muscle thats tender to touch and showing up as lump when I touch it.

Lumps in your groin? First place I’d go is probably not ST.

That said, I consistently can feel my inguinal lymph nodes, but they are not sore or “swollen” unless I’m dealing w/ something wrong below that area or a general full-body sickness.

sounds like a lymph node which means an infection. could be skin, could be herpes could be GC, chlamydia…

go see a doctor

Could a strained muscle show up as a lump when you press on it?

This is literally the last place you should be going for a diagnosis. Go see a doctor.

just putting the word hernia out there. not saying that is what it is, but something you’ll want to rule out.

hernia definitely on list
just a strained muscle??? unlikely

you need to be examined

I just went for a physical and brought my “swollen” lymph nodes to my doctors attention. My doctor said that on some lean body types, the lymph nodes can be more “prevalent”. That being said, she still wants me to go to radiology to make sure there isn’t an issue. I highly suggest you go to your doctor and do the same. If nothing else, ease of mind will be worth it.

Its not bulging out like a hernia. If I press on it it feels like the size of M&M. I didn’t notice this it all until last night so maybe I should give it a day or two.

oh that is not that big
yeah you can wait

Dont joke with this shit people.
My wife was very lean and noticed a “swollen” lymph node just before her 40th birthday.
Turned out to be cancer (metastatic melanoma). She is still around, alive and kicking because she was lean enough to notice the lump in the first place, was healthy enough to very quickly recover from the operation to remove the cancer, and was smart enough to go and get that shit checked out RIGHT AWAY.

Yeah, I’m not trying to beat a dead horse here, but definitely make arrangements to see your primary care provider.

In early 2012 I was out walking my dog one morning and sensed some slight discomfort/tenderness in my groin. Of course I had to check it out right then and there (thank goodness it was dark) and low and behold, I found a swollen node… mine was a bit larger than a M&M though. Maybe a peanut M&M?

Anyway, I called the doctor that morning and got in that afternoon. I first saw my physician’s PA. I showed her the swollen node and also the “bug bites” on my lower right flank/hip since they were on the same side as the node and I knew enough about how the lymphatic system works to understand that even small cuts can cause nodes to swell in certain situations. She was concerned enough to call the doctor in-- basically b/c she couldn’t figure out what the bites were. The doc took one look at my line of “bites” and declared confidently that I had shingles (I’m 35, btw). I had been in the middle of a tough marathon build-up along with some highly stressful personal issues (including two deaths in the family) and my body had pretty much had enough. I had dismissed the “bites” two days earlier as being spider bites.

So it could be a virus (as in my case), an infection (any cuts or scrapes on your abdominal area/lower torso back?), or it could be something more serious. Don’t panic, but do make the move and see your physician.

Go get it checked out. I asked the same question in the LR not that long ago. In my case I had some soreness and swelling in both sides. After doing a 40k commute a few days later the right side got really sore (hard to get out of chair sore) and that side swelled up to a size resembling a golf ball. I was told it could be a form of hernia where the bowel (I think) protrudes through the muscle lining and can get knotted (pretty serious according to my radiologist sister - who took me straight up for an informal ultrasound). A more careful examination later suggested regular swelling from an infection (a an exact source could not be found but it was simultaneous to a case of ‘grapes’ ) Antibiotics brought it right back down.

Go see your GP and if required get an ultrasound and/or biopsy.

I had a swollen lymph node there and it turned out to be Hodgkins Disease. 39 years later I am still doing well. But, glad I got it checked. Good luck. I hope it’s nothing.

MrDavidAlex,

I experienced similar pain and concern similar to what you are experiencing three weeks prior to a 70.3. I was initially diagnosed with a Hernia only to be told it was not. I went thru a litany of test to determine the cause of groin swelling. x-rays, ultra sound, blood and urine work. In the end, I was diagnosed with benign cysts in my lymph nodes. The cause is yet to be known. I share this because I was pretty scared for a few days and even though I was seeking a solution thru the medical community I was receiving different diagnosis. I went from being concerned about my race season to being concerned about my family. Therefore, I understand the you reaching out to the ST community for feedback.

Perhaps some form of this was helpful

By the way, infections in your lymph nodes in the groin can be caused by STD’s (60% of time). My wife of fourteen yrs was like WTF?!? In my case it wasn’t an infection, but we got a good laugh out of it.

Derek

I, once, did a lot of massaging around the hips and pubis. I realized that I was really tight, right around my waist. So, I massaged for like 40 minutes, even busted out the lacrosse ball and rolled on it.

For the entire next week, everything down there was swollen, tender and lumpy. I imagine there was a lot of tissue damage (either from the massage or from all the training) and the massage just irritated/inflamed everything.

Maybe your situation is similar? Mine cleared up, it was (initially) scary and (then) embarrassing.

Just found this thread. I’m in the exact same place now.

Wednesday noticed a lump in my groin. Also a string of lumps in what feels like a vein going down into my leg.

Couldn’t get into to my GP so wound up at the urgent care place. My fear was a blood clot, had an issue in the past.

The docs diagnosis was a strain of the gracilis. Kind of fit because I’d been doing strength training on that area. So I started on anti inflammatories.

This morning it was hurting a good bit so I went to my GP. They dismissed the gracilis diagnosis and sent me for an ultrasound. Thinking was lymphadenitis or blood clot.

Turns out to be lymphadenitis, or so they think. Still can’t explain the line of nodules running along the vein. Kind of like a string of pearls. The vein looks good, so no idea what they are. The whole area is tender and getting more painful.

Just started antibiotics. Go back in a week to recheck and probably a CT to try and find the cause. Hopefully it’s just a weird infection and will resolve easily enough.

My wife and I actually met through Team in Training. So we’ve both heard the stories of something seemingly small turning into something life changing.

Really hope it’s just an infection and it clears up soon.
I have an ultrasound of the abdomen Wednesday to try and rule out a few things as the cause of something I am dealing with. I always fear the worst-hypochondriac at times:(- so on pins and needles right now

All the best…to both of us!!

I don’t want to scare the shit out you guys, but swollen lymph nodes need to be taken seriously. We all get swollen nymph nodes from time to time. It’s usually just an infection and no big deal.

I had a swollen non-tender lymph node and didn’t think too much about it. After a while my GP took blood tests and told me I was fine. Everything is ok. Just days later I started feeling pain in my stomach. I went to the emergency unit, took more blood tests, gastroscopy and an ultrasound. But they couldn’t find what was wrong. It was only after a CT scan they found a tumour in my stomach, which on closer examination (a biopsy) turned ut to be Lymphoma. After that it’s 5 months of chemo and the season is wasted.

Hope I didn’t scare anyone too much. As mentioned, swollen nymph nodes are usually caused by an infection. But one needs to pay attention to them and find the cause.

Agreed - had node in neck that was hard and swollen for about 6 weeks after antibiotics didn’t do anything, had a biopsy which showed Hodgkin’s lymphoma - early stage. I start 6 months of chemo this Wednesday with excellent chance of cure. Doc says vast majority of swollen nodes are just infection but good to see you are getting them checked out. Good luck
