Switzerland 70.3

Any of you guys heading to Fabianland in (about) 2 weeks? Looking forward to it. Just checked my Garmin which suggest my regular ride has 1515m of climbing…for Switzerland’s 750m! Hopefully it isn’t too out of whack.

Any tips on taper? I wasn’t really planning one as I feel I recover well from my brick sessions…

I wish I was going back. Did the race last year, it was great. The lake is crystal clear but cold. The climbing is good, a couple steep sections (The Beast and Witches hill). The crowds on those sections are great. The run is mostly flat with the exception of the staircase in town. again great crowds.

Have fun.

Andy

Post a report when you’re done as its on my to do list for 2011…

Good luck and enjoy

Pre-Race
We stayed about 800m from transition which was sweeettt!
First bummer was expecting to be able to get Gatorade somewhere nearby as I had been training with it and some maltodextrin mixed. Not so. Used a mixture with apple juice instead (low GI) and used on course stuff. Bummer No.2. Forgot my gels so had to run back to the house to get them which actually made a nice swim warm up.

Swim. 42mins
After reading Mr Empfield’s rocking article on open water swimming and feeling quite good in the water leading upto the race, I felt I could feed off some of the speed of the front guys so got on the inside about 2 from the front. Not to be. Got stuck trying to negotiate round the guys in front of me who were just faffing on then tried in vain to bridge to the guys who were pulling away. Lesson: Get to the front. Thanks to Emilio too for the swim cap sandwich tip.

**Bike **. 2hr 52
Really really really cool bike course with amazing support. So much bike porn in transition it should have come with a health warning. Felt sick on the first lap and thought I was going to do a Stadler and vomit all over the top tube. I didn’t and eventually the nausea passed.

I noticed that people seem to lose way too much speed in corners though. Saw a few people with flats and felt sorry for them as I was carrying a flat kit too but one has to push on I suppose.

**Run ** 2hr 10
Going backwards the entire time which was annoying as I felt I performed well in my bricks in training. I suppose a combo of the unexpected heat and being ill on the bike and trying to compensate took its toll.

5hr 52 finish
Not really too bad for my second tri and good stuff to build on for next time. Trying not to dwell too much on the negatives.

I would recommend it as a race for any of you to try. Organisation and support were top quality! Can be a little expensive but always depends how much you want to spend.

Special thanks to all slowtwitchers for being the fountain of knowledge that never dries

Some interesting things I notices
Raelerts Postion looks crazy aero. Lieto’s looks quite comfortable but Raelert went by on the other side of the road and it looked nuts. Maybe he was getting a drink or something

Some guy rocking around in a full skinsuit on the Saturday

Some guy wearing a neon green outfit comprising of a speedo, tank top and head band time trialling up a hill on course

Alot of people from the Faris Al Sultan school of fashion

One guy in FULL Columbia HTC gear. I called him Cavendish as I went by ha ha!
