Fred Bousquet of Auburn swam a 18.74 in the 50 in prelims. Previous record was a 19:05. Next fastest time was a 19.30.
That’s 50 yards, right?
I was just going to post about it. To take 0.30 off a 50 free record is amazing. They better show the race when they air NCAAs in a couple weeks.
Bousquet’s always had mad levels of sprint talent, but has been inconsistent at the world level meets. Maybe with no Hall and Popov competing this year he’ll finally get the WC gold he’s well capable of.
I can’t find mention of this anywhere on the web - I was going to post about it on my blog, but I want to have a link to the results. In fact, the most recent 50 free record I can find is Popov’s from 2000 (meters) and Bosquet’s record from '04 (in yards). Both are well over 20"
Nevermind - here we go: http://www.ncaasports.com/swimming/mens/championship-results/2005/P4
That is one FAST swim. I hope they do show it in a few weeks (women’s coverage is on tomorrow at 2pm) because I am VERY interested to see what his turn looks like.
Last night while I was on the trainer (for 3 hours, ugh!) I popped in a tape of the 1995 Mens NCAAs. Tom Dolan’s 4:08 500 was just sick, considering the guy had some of the worst turns I’d ever seen. Plus, his stroke was pretty ugly, and the dude was just SKINNY!
I can’t wait to see Lochte tear it up in the 200 IM.
Lochte “only” swam a 1:44 in prelims and only swam a 45.81 leading off the medley relay.
That is amazing. I put that right up there in the “how the hell did they do that” department. I still can’t believe he went that fast. Boy must have a jump like a frog off the walls. G
awesome! would like to see his reaction time off the blocks. It’s amazing how he could maintain his speed in the second 25yrds.
Last year’s (2004) NCAA Division I championships were swum short course meters- the new pattern is to swim SCM championships in Olympic years and yards the rest of the time. Bousquet set the SCM world record in the 50 free last year at NCAAs. There were something like 6 SCM world records at last year’s men’s NCAAs, plus a couple of relays that were well under the stated world records but didn’t count under FINA rules because they contained swimmers that compete under different passports. (ie Auburn using Fred and Trinidad’s favorite son George Bouvell went 1:23.75 in the 200 free relay last year for the US Open record, but the official world record/world best is only 1:25.55)
Test him for the clear.
My wife and I should try and get down there tomorrow night or Saturday…always amazing to watch that kind of speed in the water.
Do it! I had so much fun watching women’s NCAAs when they were in Ann Arbor in 1996. For a pretty cheap ticket price, it seemed like I ended up seeing a majority of the women who would medal in Atlanta a couple months later.
I saw numerous NCAA men’s DI meets during the late 80s earlu 90s - they are increadible. Sit up high inthe stands - the swimmers look gigantic and the 25 y pool so short. Watch what they do under water off the starts and turns. I mean the guys in the breastroke events are taking like 4 to 6 strokes per lap.
Just seemed like they swam in slow motion and effortlessly.
I’ve been at tons of national and international level meets, and the mens DI NCAAs still sticks out in my mind.
WOW! Did he even have to take a breath?
There’s always big meets at the U of MN…just hard to make time to go see them! Looks like we’ll be heading down tomorrow night though and there should be some good events:
200 Medley Relay
400 Individual Medley
100 Butterfly
200 Freestyle
100 Breaststroke
100 Backstroke
800 Freestyle Relay
And I agree about the breastrokers…their pullouts are amazing.
This is what I don’t get about swimming.
18.74 off the block I’m assuming, but what could they swim a 50 in off the wall? 20,21 or so? For the love of god and all that’s holy that’s like 2.5X faster than me! These guys are probably capable of what a 40-45sec 100?
Now I know I’m a crappy swimmer but come on! I’m not a great runner or biker either but are there people running 2.5X faster than I can? Even when I was a fat couch potatoe I could probably come close to a 9:30 pace mile, roughly 2.5X the current world record. I’m also pretty sure I could hold a 13.5 MPH pace completely untrained for a 40KTT, which is roughly 2.5 the pace of world record 40K TT pace.
So what gives? Here I am training my @ss of and these guys are WAYYYYYY faster than me. By comparison at present I’m only like 50-70% off of world record mile pace…I don’t get it.

60-70K a week in pool time helps refine natural talent and ability pretty well.
There’s always big meets at the U of MN
Yeah, like the MN Masters State Championships in 2 weeks! I’m sure we’ll outdraw the NCAA’s, tho
I’ll probably head down Fri or Sat evening. Maybe I’ll see ya down there.

Probably, the reason your run and bike is (relatively) closer, is that running and biking for the most part incorporate speed, strength and endurance, while the adding on the importance of technique in swimming makes the percentage you are from them seem further. In reality, it’s probably all about the same, b/c w/ improvements in technique, you can cut some of that time, where as with running and biking, you’d actually just have to go faster and harder, giving you less opportunity to get closer to the times.
Anybody’s that is planning on going to the meet…BIG FAVOR please!
Could you videotape Gary Marshall (Stanford) in the 100 and 200 breaststrokes? Or if you have video footage of the 2005 PAC-10 championships of those swims, that would be fantastic!
I’m willing to pay money for good video.
Thanks.
