In India on business next week, quite desperate to swim and my Taj Hotel in Mumbai has a rooftop pool. Why do keep telling me not to swim? Doesn’t chlorine kill any bacteria? Would be nice if somebody had any direct experience. Thank you

Swam in hotel pools and club pools all over India. It’s about as unsafe as swimming in the lane beside Michael Phelps at the Rio Olympics.
Don’t worry, go swim.
Also if you can change your reservation stay at the Taj Tower/Taj Palace Colaba across from the Gateway to India. It is worth it. The gym is awesome and the pool is 100 ft long. Legend has it that Jamsedji Tata the founder of Tata group was denied entry into a top end hotel in his own country back in the days of the British Raj, so he said, “screw it, I am just building the best hotels that anyone will be able to go to” . If you go there, tell the head lifeguard, a guy named Parmeshwaran that Dev from Canada sends regards, but alas my project in Mumbai is done and over after 4 years so I don’t have an excuse to use that pool on account of company trips at this time.
yes pools are very safe. There are plenty of really good pools everywhere. However the process and red tape to get to one of them is kinda all over the place. Also most pools will not use lane lines throughout the day. So you have to be careful of people swimming everywhich way.
Dadar, a suburb of Mumbai has a world class pool - its a 50m pool with a side 25m pool. And is incredible as a pool itself. The staff and the locker rooms are kinda shit.
it is called the Mahatma Gandhi Swimming Pool in Dadar. Probably a 20 minute cab ride from the Taj.
Just don’t swim in the Ganges. Last time I was there, a dead bloated body went floating past.
Thanks so much. Packing my swimsuit and fins then, much appreciated.
that’s no different from Ironman Cork…

Did you switch to Taj Mahal Palace/Tower in Colaba ? Highly recommended. It may be a pain depending on where you want to go to in Mumbai, however, getting anywhere there is pain, so what the heck, may as well be somewhere ideal for training in the first place. When I am there, I do long morning swims and evening I get in the awesome gym for 45 min and add an extra 30 min easy swim. Basically I end up with 3 hrs of training per day, 3 hrs of traffic, 6 hrs of work stuff, and 3 hrs of eating/overhead stuff. I figure I can commute to get to workouts and stay close to where I need to do work, or stay close to workouts and commute to work. As being on the road is a pain in the ass, I want the sanity of being close to my workouts. I can do plenty of stuff on my phone sitting in traffic getting to work meetings.
