Well, I’m in the Seattle area for a few weeks for the holidays and my rapidly approaching wedding. I usually swim in the Issaquah pool (which, by the way, is EXACTLY the same as when I learned to swim in it 25 years ago), but all of Issaquah is in the dark (along with half the eastside), so I need a new pool.
I’m staying downtown for a while until the lights come back on. What’s the best place to drop in and get some laps in? Is Greenlake any good (the pool, not the lake)?
Bummer about the power still being out on the eastside. Hopefully it comes on for those folks pretty soon because that’s got to be getting old.
Anyways, back to your question about swimming in Seattle. There’s an informal Masters swim at Medgar Evers pool which is at 23rd and Cherry, http://seattle.gov/parks/aquatics/Pools/evers/schedule.htm. It runs from 6:30am-7:30am M,W,F. You might also see if you can drop in at All Star Fitness which is at 700 Fifth Avenue, www.allstarfitness.com. They’ve got an active Masters group from 6-8am M,W,F.
The Green Lake pool is okay but it’s usually really warm.
Have fun while you’re in Seattle and congratulations on the wedding!
from downtown medgar evers is close and less crowded than greenlake. There’s an informal masters group there most evenings and lap swim is all day on Sat.
Queen anne pool is also a good choice. Mary Meyers swim clinics runs a weekend masters program there.
I have friends who swim at seattle athletic club and say the masters program is good there.
Foster Pool in Tukwila and Evergreen Pool in White Center aren’t too far. Evergreen is usually pretty empty for lap swim (7 pm MW) but it’s 5 dollars. Foster might be crowded (6:30 to 7:30) for laps but it depends.
I’ll second (or third or whatever) medgar evars. I’ve never attended the masters group there, but it is open most of the day, and you can drop in any time without membership of any kind. They close for a few hours in the morning which kind of sucks. But I think you can swim pretty much from 10:30 or 11 to 5 or so, and then it reopens again later.
You could also try one of the pools downtown like the YMCA or Seattle Athletic Club, but I’m not sure how keen they are on 1 month membership.
The pool that I usually swim at (Pro Club in Bellevue) is also closed but I was thinking about going the Redmond City Pool (a.k.a. Hartman Pool) tomorrow morning. There is a small masters group there every weekday from 6-7am. I haven’t checked yet about whether they’re open today but I’ll post here once I do… $5 per session, paid at the front desk. The pool is run by NW Center, a local charity group.
Evans Pool (greenlake) - I agree that it is more than a bit on the warm side. There used to be an evening Masters group there but I can’t remember the details. May have been MWF 8-9pm but I’m not sure… there were definitely some fast folks in the water there…
I swam at Medgar Evars a few times back in the summer of 2000. From what I can vaguely recall it was a fine place to swim. Typical city pool layout - six lanes, some diving boards… I can’t remember what the temperature & crowds were like.
Allstar Fitness in the Muni Tower (across from the big Bank of America tower at 701 5th Avenue) has a 25-lap pool with Masters on Wed/Fri. Just tell them you want a 5 day pass to check out the facility and they will give it to you in a heartbeat. Let me know if you need futher info.
I find it mildly humorous that Poverty Rock is going to be without power the longest. I live in a 100 year old house in Greenlake and we never lost power. Then again I have a 35-foot section of tree resting against my house.
