Swimming in Houston (1)

Hello slowtwitchers! I am new to the forum and looking for any guidance from you all. I recently started a swimming only coaching business (swimPR) that focuses on the technical aspects of swimming to help athletes become more efficient in the water. I got into triathlons in 2006 after swimming for over 20 years. I was an NCAA All-American at the University of Texas and member of the U.S. National Team while competing at 3 US Olympic Swimming Trials. I am hoping to help athletes understand how pool swimming translates to a faster and easier open water swim, and looking to the slowtwitch community for some advice. If anyone has suggestions on how I can help the local Houston triathlon community, I would love to hear from you.

Thank you so much for your assistance!

I work at UH and swim at the rec center. Never had a coach but could use some technique pointers before IMTX. What are you offering?

I offer private & semi-private lessons, video analysis, and online workouts. I live and coach out in cypress, but travel to athletes in town if their gym/pool allows outside coaches. Happy to help anyway I can if you are interested. joe@swimpr.com or www.swimpr.com for more information.

Have you considered establishing a triathlete focused masters swim group?

Look up SnappingT on here. He’s got one in The Woodlands area - Magnolia Masters. Although there’s a good general master swim program up here (i.e. WMST), he’s done a good job creating a niche for himself with triathletes who do not want to go to a traditional masters program. He rents out a community pool and has early morning, lunchtime and evening (at a high school) workouts.

You could do something similar in your area. You said you’re in Cypress. I’m guessing communities like Bridgeland, Coles Crossing, etc. have a pool you could use. You’d be looking for triathletes who have no interest in swimming with Fleet’s master program. Maybe hookup with CyTri and TruTri to help market what your offering.

Good luck.

Joey,

The memorial area has more money and a much larger surrounding population base than the woodlands. The dad’s club has tried to start a tri/masters program but they have been unable to because (I think) no wanted to get up early. So my opinion is that is the soft space in the market. Call Bill Goudeket, tell him you want to start a tri/masters team and ask for advice. Bill is by far the most successful coach on the business side that I know and he likes you (per a conversation in 1999). I’d start by putting “Beat Andy Potts when I was 16 and he was 20 in the 400 IM at Olympic Trials*” on your tag line.

Another option is to call Michelle LeBlanc. Her noncompete is almost up, she might be looking for someone.

(*prelims only)

Thanks for the input. I have considered starting a masters group as I know there are a lot of interested athletes or should I say triathletes looking for a better group out in Cypress. Problem I am having is pool time, but yes both Bridgeland and Coles have heated pools I believe, and could possibly workout.

Joe,
I’m one of the co-founders of CyTri, although not very active with the club anymore. I know the people that run/admin the Coles Crossing pool, or at least know the people who know the people. I lived in Coles for 11 years. I’m not sure what hoops need to be jumped through in order to get access to the use of the pool but I can point you in the right direction if you’d like.

There needs to be an alternative to Fleet’s master program. There are many of us that would like to swim in a masters setting but Fleet’s masters’ hours don’t work for most people. Their masters’ program is an afterthought at best.
