Swimming in Brevard, NC?

I’m taking a vacation in Brevard, NC. Going mountain + road biking, running, white water stuff and so on.

But…I need to get a couple quality swim workouts while I am there because I have my first tri the day after I return home.

The question is: Are there lakes to train in? What are the temps in the lakes? Is there a pool in the area that has open lap or masters swimming?

Thanks!

There are several lakes within 30 - 40 minutes - not 30 miles heading west on 64, but some are private. Lake Jocassee ,Toxaway, and some lakes in Cashiers and Sapphire are a few. When are you going? The water is going to be cold now, but will be in the high 70’s and maybe 80’s by summer. Most of the lakes are very clean and clear. We have a small cabin in Sapphire and have found several places to swim. Sapphire is about 30 mins from Brevard.

I would contact Keith at Keith’s Triathlon Shop in Saluda, NC. 171 East Main St.Saluda, NC 28773 828-749-1816. I know he swims somewhere close to his shop.

Check out the Brevard Racquet Club: http://www.brevardhealthandracquetclub.com/
The use to charge 10 dollars for nonmember per visit, but might be more now. But you can find some free passes at places like the public library.

Hendersonville YMCA is an option for swimming, too.

Plenty of great riding. If you need any riding info, let me know.

I am going next week, Sunday through Friday. Are the Lakes close to 60 degrees yet? The raquett & health club looks like an option and it’s very close to where we are staying.

Probably above 60°. I just found this site for Lake Keowee and it is reporting the current temp of 62 if the site is up to date. Lake Keowee should have a similar temp of the others in the area: http://www.fishingnotes.com/lakeinfo.php?id=38362

Here is a link to Lake Jocassee (we named one of our dogs after this lake) http://www.southcarolinaparks.com/park-finder/state-park/1355.aspx

We have a friend that often visits are cabin and just jumps in a swims in Lake Toxaway and Whisper Lake near Sapphire and has yet to be arrested for trespassing. (Sapphire is different from Sapphire Valley)

We have found several swimming places, but they are 40 - 45 mins from Brevard headed toward Cashiers and Highlands. If you are interested in those, I will send you directions later. I need to get them from my husband as I’m too directional challenged to give you good directions.

Not sure what lake levels are like at this time of the year. Most look good according to charts and the area had plenty of rain, but not sure how much water is being released.

Great trail running and mountain biking. Great road biking. You can do some rolling valley rides along creeks and streams or just climb up and up for a good distance.
