Is there a chart similar to running charts?
Something like based upon 100 time you should be able to swim 1650 yards in x minutes?
Or based upon 500 time you should be able to swim 2000 yards in x minutes ?

You can use the CSS test which (for me) is pretty accurate. The 400m speed will be a few seconds quicker per 100m than your 1500m time.

I used that when training for a 20km OWS and was pretty useful for the 10k swim sets i.e we’d be doing say 2k at CSS+6 and using beepers to keep us on pace. It was good because if you didn’t use the beeper, your pace would be way too quick to start with and then you’d die. So for me CSS is handy. You can also use it for your normal swim sets, 200s might be CSS-5 for example. It helps you pace your swim sets a bit better, so you’re not doing the first few flat out and the last few you die.
This chart is pretty solid.
I think that chart is a little aggressive on the 100s pace but it is pretty good.
The 25s are a little off too, but that’s probably the most imprecise anyhow.
This chart is pretty solid.
Wow that’s almost exact for me
Thank you
.
thanks, that CSS prediction is spot-on for me.
The Tri-dot online coaching system uses the same test, 400 hard, 5min easy recovery, 200 hard. They didn’t share the CSS charts but use that to set training speed for their swim workouts. The zones were accurate for me I felt. Did quit the coaching though, did not have enough time for all the workouts they thought I should be doing…
The chart that dcpinsonn posted is hopelessly optimistic, my 100m time predicts a 22-23min 1500 which is something I could swim ten years ago, currently more like 27-8min…
When I was training and racing seriously, would simply do a 1650yd time trial once a month, to check on things. As long as that was under 23min I’d keep on doing my minimal swim training. Now that old age has caught me, need much more training, but still don’t have the time…
Yeah not claiming the chart is perfect but it lines up for me. It’s like asking for a marathon time off of a 5k. The 100m time shows your potential with the right training. Just shows you what it’s realistic to train for but it’s almost always going to be harder for athletes to work their way up the chart.

The thing with that chart is that it has pretty wide ranges for your times. You can go down or up about 3 rows to hit your 100 time, and then across each of those to see where your other times and your 1500 would be… Looks like you put yourself in the 1;10 to 1;17 100 box, well you can go down 3 more boxes and still be at 1;17. If you go across there, then it is 25+…
And of course if you were a good swimmer in the old days, are old now and not doing much swimming, it will be off a bit because you can still bust out a good 100 on memory, but that memory only goes so far and the longer swims will be way off.
Or you can be a swimmer like Lionel(yes it is a Lionel thread now!), and your 1500 time will be a horrible predictor of your 100 time. His mile time would have hime doing about a minute for his 100, and he is no where close to that kind of time(about a 53 for SCY).
But for the most part, a pretty good calculator I would say, lots of leeway to find yourself somewhere in there. Much better than trying to predict a marathon runner from a 400m run, that would be an impossible task…
