So…can I swim in a pool with open wounds? Do I run the risk of infection, or will it not harm them at all? (wrecked 48 hours ago)
Just had buddy crash on Saturday and he went to see Doc on Tuesday for advice on how to dress wounds, and further s/b/r. Here is what she told him about swimming.
Swimming, though, she said could be bad in a public pool due to risk of infection from bacteria in the water. Probably best to wait a couple of weeks for the wound to have healed over before venturing back in the pool and even then probably best to cover the wound with a waterproof dressing like Tegaderm.
Well that sucks. I was hoping that someone would tell me that swimming is fine with open wounds. Oh well, guess it’s a reason to B/R more.
I wouldn’t swim with fresh road rash in a public pool out of courtesy to the other patrons. I would, have, and recently did OWS swim with fresh road rash…I just made sure to clean it as best I could afterward (regardless, you are taking a chance).
Grappling with same problem here. Crashed Sunday, first swim today. Injuries almost totally on legs, so I just wore a Desoto speed-tube. Was fine.
Since I was gonna look like a tri-geek anyways, did a big paddle set with it on too
I got hit by a car early in the season…had some terrible road rash below the knee on my right leg…i soaked it up in neosporin…some waterproof gauze and tape then put a 2xu compression sleeve over it so i didn’t loose the dressing and also so i didn’t leave a trail of scabs in my lane.

Depends on how bad the road rash is. I had some pretty nasty road rash last year from a crash and swam way too soon. I tried using the waterproof bandages but they just didn’t work on certain parts. (elbows, knees) I even tried liquid bandage. The wounds took forever to heal. Should have just stayed out of the water for 10 days.
If the open wounds are small, you could try the waterproof bandages…otherwise just skip the pool for a while.
Swam for the first time today (only 20min), 4 days after the wreck. Everything felt fine, but my major concern is the lake water and how to keep my hand bandaged so that it is covered for the bike portion of the race on Saturday. I’m thinking of wrapping my palm like a boxer with tape. I considered a cycling glove after the swim, but I’d still need to keep my hand wrapped inside the glove anyway.
my policy is not until it has stopped weeping. When its dry and scabbed, I use second skin on it ans swim anywhere. Depending on the severity, it might be a coup

Agree. Why is this even up for question?
Up for question so I could have it answered. This is a forum…Right?

It is a forum, but what if someone answered your “Should I go swimming in a public pool if I have injuries that are still open and bleeding?” question with a “sure, go right ahead”? Would you listen to them?
Where did you get the “and bleeding”?
Get water proof gel burn pads…they have them at your pharmacy…they come in large sizes…protects you and others.
Heal fast!
It’s usually about two weeks for me from crash time to swim time. The road rash areas get all slimy after swimming at that point, but aren’t seeping any liquids!
You don’t want to be like the girl with the open wound who was zip lining went into a lake and picked up that flesh eating disease. I know that’s a big extreme but still never know what could happen.
