Sorry if I missed something like this but I did try to search for it.
Anyone ever put in their 500m or 1500m times for swimming in the a running pace calculator such as http://www.mcmillanrunning.com/mcmillanrunningcalculator.htm
and looked at the “sprint workout” section and used that to estimate their training workout speeds?
For example, I want to go under 8 min for a 500m swim in a sprint triathlon.
The calculator puts out 1:32 to 1:41 for 100m intervals.
If I can do ten 100 meters on 2 minutes and average 1:35 for all 10, will I be able to swim 500m under 8 minutes?
Just a note about that calculator, I have seen that the predicted paces have been relatively accurate for folks in the 1:00/100 to 1:45/100 range, less folks outside that range have tried them. A really easy test is to look at the 100 estimate for Red, and see if you can do 10x100 at that pace on :10-15 rest without croaking. If you can, you’re in the ballpark. If you really find that it is off, fitness, rather than speed, might be the factor, and you may wish to try doing a 30 minute swim for distance, and use the T-30 based test (from the drop-down menu). This might give numbers that are more accurate for your fitness level. If you are just using it as a predictor of race performance (essentially running the thing in reverse), well, as the poster above noted, YMMV.
I’m just trying to correlate my training with my race goals. And my race will be in open water, with other athletes and I will likely be wearing a wetsuit. So I’d like to think that’s a wash. But that’s not what this concern is about. I’m looking for ways to pace myself in training to allow me to achieve my goals in races. As of now, I think I will try to use this calculator as a ruler.
How much should I swim in week to break 8 min in 500m?
It really depends, is your stroke complete shit or do you just not have the yards in your arms yet. Those are two very different scenarios and require different approaches. 8 mins is not fast for a 500 by any stretch so just swimming should get you there. If you’re swimming 10k-15k a week it would be a good start. But it really depends how you are in the other sports and how much time you have to spend.
Is it the holiday lake race you are planning on doing?

Really not a valid question to ask. There is no magic yardage that will get you to that pace - I can swim once a month (if at all) and hit 500m in 8min with no problems. I swim with a lot of other people that swim 10K weekly and aren’t close to being able to hit 8 min for a 500m swim.
My .02c - hit 1:30/100yd on :10-15 (and feel good while doing it) in the pool and you’re probably set for an 8min 500m swim (assuming your open water skills are up to par) while still being able to bike and run after.

Hmm maybe thats why I asked if his stroke was bad or if he hasn’t swam a lot… If you’re healthy and swimming 10k-15k a week with good mechanics there is no reason you should be swimming over 8min 500s. If he has crappy mechanics he could swim 40k a week and it may not matter.
Beginner swimmer here…can someone explain to me what this means? I hear people at the pool saying this kinda stuff and have no idea what they are talking about. I have been swimming for about 2 months twice a week and timed myself the first time for a 500m swim and completed it in just under 8 mins. I have no idea if this is good or not but I definitely feel like I can improve. Each time I hit the pool I feel that my endurance is increasing and I am concentrating on good form (or at least what I think is good form).

Your time actually swimming 100y is 1:30. Rest for 10-15 seconds, and do it again, and again.
