Swim Training - NYC

Getting ready for the Harriman 1/2 tri in May. Question about swim training…

My training partner and I have no problem putting together the brick workouts in the cold (just wear enough layers and look out for the ice) but am looking for alternatives regarding the swim training.

  1. Resources for weight lifting strategies that complement swim training?
  2. Group swim classes in the NYC metro area that repliicate (as best as possible) the swim experience of a mass tri start?
  3. Resources (shops/clubs) in the NYC metro area that sell/rent wetsuits and enjoy good reputations.

Any thoughts of suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Please reply directly here or send me and email: mrgatens@yahoo.com

Thanks,

B.

i just had a very good experience with doug stern in nyc. tom d spoke highly of his camps in curaco (review on bikesportmichigna.com under daily articles) so i looked him up over thanksgiving and did a 1hr lesson. it was very worthwhile - perhaps too much info in to little time though. i don’t live in the city so i can’t meet with him regularly but if i did, i would definetely sign up for one of his 6week classes.

his contact info is at work (i’m off this week) but a quick google search should get you his email address.

There are a few places that I know of for swimming in NYC. Chelsea Piers (http://www.chelseapiers.com/sc/new.htm) has a pretty good pool and they have a masters swim program. They also have private coacjhing available. I have taken a few stroke lessons and it has helped me. Asphalt Green( http://www.asphaltgreen.org/ ) is another popular place to swim. It is on the upper east side, in the 90’s I believe. A lot of triathletes there. The best tri store I have been to is the Ultimate Tri store on 46th street between 7th and 6th aves. It is on the 3rd floor and pretty hard to find. http://sbrshop.com/. They are moving soon I think.

Hope this helps

I second Doug Stern. His classes are great. Check his website, he has another set of classes starting early January (I am actually planning to sign up again, just haven’t done it yet with all this holiday madness going on).

I second the reccomendation for Doug Stern, but what race are you talking about?

Hey njmtbbg,

I’m also doing the Harriman 1/2.

Red Tide has a good Masters swim program.I believe they swim at John Jay College, over on the west side.

I swim over at Asphalt Green. Lots of triathletes, and hard core swimmers.Very expensive though($950.00 a year).

Doug Sterns classes are good if your a beginner/intermediate swimmer(which is where I fall in).
