Swim stroke question (1)

I know I won’t word this correctly so be patient. I actually know very little about swimming other than I put a lot of time into it.

On your catch where should your hand be in relation to the side of your body? If your elbow is high and somewhat parallel to the surface with forearm perpindicular (90 degrees) to upper arm this would place your hand the length of your upper arm away from your torso during the catch. Is this correct or should the hand be closer to the torso during the catch?

There are different styles. Some have it woder and the fingers point down, some have itmore under their body and the fingers point more to the side at the catch.

You can look at the video at www.swim.ee and see both styles in very good swimmers.

As long as you have your hand and forearm orthogonal to the direction of motion you are doing good.

In my own case I am wider because having my hands closer in causes shoulder pain.
